Absolutely freaking out

I have been having classic IBS symptoms for about 2 years, and was referred to a doctor but due to an admin error and a change of personnel, I didn't get a follow up appointment. I had an ultrasound about a year ago which showed up a slightly swollen spleen and fatty liver. I was referred for a CT scan which didn't arrive, so I chased it and eventually had it on Tuesday. Now my surgery have just called to say I need an MRI and an urgent gynae referral. I have had no gynae issues, and I admit I haven't done enough to sort out the fatty liver but I am now absolutely terrified and confused. To make it worse, the secretary has casually mentioned that the GP isn't in till Monday so he will ring me then. I have asked to speak to someone else and they will "try to phone me tomorrow afternoon, if they get a chance."

So now I am sitting here shaking, my kids want to know what's happening and I don't know. Can anyone please shed any light at all about what might be going on? As I say I was expecting a diagnosis of IBS, I have had no other symptoms and I I only asked for that so I can know what to do about it.

Please tell me that this is probably all routine?

  • Hello Kb768 and welcome to the forum.

As much as we would like to be able to give you the answers and peace of mind you're seeking, we can't unfortunately, but I do hope someone at your GP surgery got back to you the other day. If they didn't, it won't be long now until you get to speak to your GP and find out more.

Having tests and waiting for the results, especially in the run-up to Christmas, must be very stressful but fingers crossed everything will be o.k.

    Kind regards,

  • Hey, why did they arrange an ultrasound?

Bit random now, but you say you have liver issues, but do you have any breathing trouble? Or, did/do your parents have any breathing or liver issues?  There's a reason I'm asking I promise!

As for a CT scan, there's only so much they can see.  The MRI is more comprehensive, and depending on the reason for the scans, they may just need an in depth check on things. Try not to panic too much, as these tests are to rule things out as much as anything.

Do you suffer with any gynae symptoms/issues? Even Polysystic Ovaries? Pre-Menopause? Endometriosis? X

  • Hi and thanks.

that's understandable, I'm not expecting a diagnosis on here, just reassurance that others have had similar, maybe?

A doctor did ring me back. I have a mass in my ovaries and they want to screen for ovarian and bowel cancer on Monday, with a view to me seeing a gynaecologist before Christmas.

  • Hi, thanks for the reply.

no, no breathing issues. And no family history I'm aware of.

    I do have PCOS though.
