Subungual melanoma

I have a light greyish vertical line on my great toenail. I have booked a GP telephonic appointment for tomorrow. I am not sure if the GP would refer me to a dermatologist. I am sure the line was not there 2 weeks back. I would like to ask if anyone knows in the worst case and if it's starting would it be cured? I am only 31 and a mother of an infant and can't stop worrying about this. Would I be able to live longer if it's treated earlier? Also what if the GP doesn't refer me?

  • Hi,

Until you see the doctor you will naturally worry, I get myself in the same position and worry straight away and while these bad things can happen, they can also as easily be explained and harmless.

Reading up, in those of predominantly African-American descent aged 20 and above, something called linear melanonycia can occur. Click here

You could also have trauma to the nail.

So many things could be the issue but I and others have found, while you will be consumed with worry which is perfectly normal, take photos and observe for changes and wait for your appointment.

  • Thank you for replying me. I hope they will refer me to a dermatologist as I have heard some won't give a referral. I think only a dermatologist can put me in ease. I have asked one of my friend who is a dermatologist way back in my country. He said it doesn't look suspicious but added it's difficult to distinguish  subungual melanoma clinically and asked me to consider a biopsy. He doesn't know how it works in the UK

  • My GP appointment  just got over. She called me in the morning and asked to come over for a face to face in the afternoon. She says it's a grove on my nail and it would have already been there and asked me to contact them if it changes. I said I am sure it was not there in the past. I don't know what to do now. I am very worried. What if it's something

  • Could someone please advise if Podiatrist will be able to help? Should I try another GP or go for private dermatologist

  • Can someone please look into this. I have booked another GP appointment who has done diploma in dermatology, but the latest appointment I got is on Jan 12 due to she being on holidays. I trimmed that nail today as it was a bit long and I couldn't see anything on the trimmed part whereas it was showing before I trimmed. The nail bed(pink soft part under nail) didn't have any mark. I am just trying to see if I get some peace of mind.

  •  I'm sorry you're still worried about your nail Dakmom.

Unfortunately no-one on the forum can advise on this but you're welcome to give our team of cancer nurses a call next week on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I know it's not nice going through the festive period with this hanging over you but it's good you've sort out a second opinion and hopefully when the time comes they will be able to give you the peace of mind you're seeking.

    Kind regards,
