Waiting for histology results ?Melanoma

Hi everyone,

I'm Katie and I'm 23 years old. I recently (03/12/2020) had an aytpical mole removed from the back of my right arm.

I told my GP about this mole during a telephone consultation about something unrelated, just as it had become itchy, she asked for a picture and then referred me to dermatology on a 2WW. I went to dermatology, the consultant said he "didn't like it, could be sinister" and it is (or was) 8mm in size, black and brown with an irregular border and the consultant also said under the dermatascope there was "some streaks and variation of colour". He told me I would need it removed immediately, and it was removed about 10 minutes later.

I had my stitches out yesterday and the wound is looking great, but I'm unsure how long I should be waiting for results from histology. They did tell me at the clinic when the mole was removed but I was so shocked I really cannot remember? Will someone phone me?

I'm in two minds really should I be worried? I know my mole had several warning signs for melanoma, but then on the other hand I feel slightly naive taking the attitude "I'm 23 it can't be cancer"

Thanks for reading everyone x

  • Hello KatieJT,

You should contact your clinic again if you're unsure of anything. Waiting times can differ and, as you know, there's been a high demand on health services due to the pandemic. I can understand you might be worried while waiting for the results, but there are some good tips here that might help.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Katie,

Every hospital trust has different waiting times for results & then, of course, Covid is disrupting some waiting times. The average time for results is 3 weeks (pre-Covid), so I would contact the consultant's secretary at the beginning of next week if you haven't heard anything. They can at least tell you if the results are back yet & when to expect a phone call or letter with an appointment date if one is necessary.

Good luck, I hope the results come back quickly & bring good news. Please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • Good luck with your results. I'm currently in the same situation after having a role removed on Friday and feeling very scared and alone.

I hope we find out our results soon. I asked about my results and they said it will either be face to face or the phone :( x

  • Hi ladies!

I've also had a very similar experience. I sent a picture to the GP on Monday 4th Jan of a mole right in the centre at the base of my neck which I've had for a while but a family member spotted at Christmas it had grown. I naively assumed the GP would say it's nothing to worry about. Fast forward a few days to Thursday 7th Jan, I went to the dermatology appointment and they took it out there and then. 5 stitches later and feeling incredibly sorry for myself! I had the stitches removed last Thursday but waiting for the results still. I'm assuming next week I'll hear something. Haha you both had your results yet? x
