Thickening of bowel wall?

Hello

Has anyone been told from CT scan they have thickening of bowel wall? I was told this last week and have had urgent referral for colonoscopy which is this week... and I'd like to know anyone elses stories (good or bad please) as to what diagnosis I could expect?

Obviously my mind jumps straight to the worst! My symptoms include constant constipation, some spot bleeding, embarrassing amount of gas and general tenderness across tummy

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

I had a CT last week showing the same thing, my colonoscopy is tomorrow so I'm in the middle of the bowel prep ( I'm half way through and so far not as bad as I thought it would be).

My symptoms are similar, and the CT scan showed the bowel wall inflammation was located in the same place that I have the abdominal pain. Drs suspect it's Crohn's disease but as my colonoscopy was referred as an urgent one my mind also jumps to the worst case scenario.

Causes of thickening of the bowel wall include infections and ibd so perhaps one of those? The colonoscopy should confirm what's causing it or at least confirm what isn't causing it!

Hope all goes well and if you're a worrier like me don't google anything

  • Thank you for replying Maylouise!

How did it go for you? I really hope all was ok? I've thought crohn's disease but just not sure  got those symptoms ‍♀️

    Xxx

  • The colonoscopy wasn't bad at all! I opted for sedation as it's my first one and was nervous beforehand. The nurses make you feel really comfortable and I was only uncomfortable when the camera was going around bends in the colon but the pain only lasted a few seconds. They took several biopsies and I didn't feel this at all.

Ask the endoscopist lots of questions so that you're not worrying too much whilst waiting for the results, he confirmed I had some thickening of the wall/inflammation and he found a few ulcers. He confirmed there were no polyps so no sign of bowel cancer, it could be an infection or Crohns but only the biopsies will confirm.

The bowel prep isn't that bad, the worst part of the whole thing is actually drinking the laxatives! Don't worry if you can't finish all of it, as long as you've managed a good 75% they can get a clear view and suction away anything that's left if needed.

Hope your procedure goes well and you get a diagnosis soon!!

  • Hi maylouise

Thank you so much for taking the time to update, and I am so pleased you didnt get the worst outcome... altho can fully recognise the prospect of crohn's is not great either!! I hope you dont have to wait too long for your results!

    Good luck!! X

  • Hi, I know your post was a while ago , but I've just come across it and I'm experiencing the same, did they identify what the thickening was?

hope you don't mind me asking.
    Thanks
