Breast lump appointment

I found a lump in my breast just over 3 weeks ago. I couldn't get a face to face appointment at my gp but I knew my smear test was due and decided to speak to a nurse during my smear test appointment. The nurse examined me and called for a dr to check me over also. It's a small hard lump which is quite deep in my breast and both the nurse and dr appeared concerned that it wasn't painful (it was sore the next day due to prodding though). I have been referred for further examination which terrifies me. I have to attend the appointment alone due to COVID and all I keep thinking is how am I going to cope if I have to receive the news that my lump is cancerous on own. I'm terrified.....

  • Hi Lucie,

im sorry to hear this has happened to you. I can't give any insight but just wanted to say the same has happened to me and I have an appointment on Monday. The Doctor checked my hard lump, also not painful and tanoyed for an urgent referral. When is your appointment? I know what you're going through, I'm 36 and just had my first baby x

  • My appointment is on Monday too! I'm 49 years old. My eldest is 20 and my youngest 17. You must be terrified, especially having a small baby. Let's hope we can both post back here on Monday with good news x

  • Ladies

Have just been through something similar and what's amazed me are the number of different things breast lumps can be which *aren't* cancer or *aren't yet* cancer.  You've done exactly the right thing in talking to nurses/GPs and getting referrals but now the waiting game is pretty scary.

I contacted my GP a few weeks ago and was sent for a mammogram.  2 different screens and 1 ultrasound later and they diagnosed microcalcifications.  I had a stereotactic biopsy a week later and after that, they diagnosed an intraductal papilloma.  Had an excision (under local) this week and should get the all clear next Thursday.

The irony is that all of this was in my right breast, when the lump I found (which was fine and no problem) was in my left breast!  And I'd never heard of any of the issues which apparently I have.  But they are all benign (so far, fingers crossed) and can be dealt with before they become more problematic.  Like I say, not all (in fact not many) lumps are the dreaded C word.  My lump was fine - the problem was actually stuff I didn't realise was there....

The nightmare in all of this has been the waiting.  Your brain does crazy things especially at 3am.  I coped by trying to use the time constructively, working out what questions to ask and learning about the various conditions from sensible websites like this one.  Easier said than done and I'm sure my OH would say that I'm veering into hypocrisy!  But my personality type definitely copes better by understanding what's happening and planning for finding out more once I've got something concrete to go on.

Big hugs to you all going through this and 'the only thing we have to fear is fear itself'.

Hoping your outcomes are good and crossing fingers
