Urgent Colonoscopy Appt

Hi All,

I was recently referred to a consultant after experiencing blood in stools and an increase in movements and one isolated incident of extreme abdominal pain, that was suspected gall stones and gall bladder infection, but later ruled out via Ultra Sound Scan.

The consultant has requested an Urgent Colonoscopy and scheduled it for just over a weeks time and it has frightened me a little.

I was wondering if anyone has had similar symptoms and then what their diagnosis was? These symptoms have been for about 8 -12 weeks.

I had presumed the bleeding was down to piles (I suffered with them after the birth of my youngest son 18 months ago), but the consultant inserted a small camera during my appointment this week to check the rectum and said that was perfectly healthy and so the bleeding must be coming from further up, hence the colonoscopy booking.

I'm 32, have two preschool boys and I'm going to be spending Christmas week preparing for a colonoscopy!

  • Hi secretscaredycat,

I have had a swelling in my rectum/ colon and have changes in bowel movement. I believe the swelling has blocked my bowels and cannot pass waste without using an enema. I am due a sigmoidoscopy in 15 hours, Sat 12 at 10. It is a less detailed procedure as the camera only goes as far as the colon. I will let you know how mine goes, if that helps. I wish you well too.

  • Good luck tomorrow Yvonne49, I'll be thinking of you. I had a sigmoidoscopy at my last appointment and apart from being a little uncomfortable it wasn't as bad as I expected.

  • How did it go [@Yvonne49]‍? Been thinking of you today.

  • Hi SecretScaredyCat. Tge sigmoidoacopy was pretty painless. They took 2 biopsies in areas where they were unhappy with. I now face a long anxious wait for results. Thanks for your kind thoughts. x

  • I'm glad it was painless, but really feel for you! This will be such a long and stressful wait. Have they given you an idea of when you are likely to have some news?

ive got everything crossed it is good news for you. Keep us posted. Always here if you need a chat!

  • Hello

I just wanted to join this thread as I am also booked in got urgent colonoscopy this friday and I'm anxious beyond belief!! I had a CT scan after being admitted for suspected appendicitis, didnt have that but theyve seen thickening on my bowel wall and now I am just petrified! I've had severe consipation for about 6 months, and some blood but not much, the pain in stomach seems to get worse but that could be the anxiety!

I hope both of you get some answers soon, it's the waiting thats the worst!!

    X

  • Hi

First good luck on friday. also with drinking all the 'stuff'!

I like you was admitted with pain and at first they thought stones but an ultrasound was ok. Next they did CT and they saw a thickening which they said could be inflammation, polyps, diverticulitis or even cancer. So then had colonoscopy. They will tell you what they find on the day so at least you will know one way or the other and not be dangling imagining the worst.

    Have you any other symptoms?

  • Hello

Thank you for replying - what was your diagnosis if dont mind me asking?

My symptoms has been continuous constipation,  some mild bleeding on and off (thought due to piles) and now this constant aching pain in stomach.

  • Hi

I had been told by various GP's that I had IBS for 18 months! I kept going back because something didn't feel right.

I had bad indigestion every day and a short sharp pain every so often above my belly button.

I had bowel cancer.... twice now!

Second time totally different symptoms, most of the bowel cancer symptoms apart from weight loss.

After 2 surgeries and chemo the second time my last ct and colonoscopy are clear.

But this was me and not you so please don't think you are the same. Last christmas my stepdad who is in his late 80's was losing blood, the GP examined him and said he didn't have piles and suspected cancer. We had a right worrying time expecting the worst and when he had his colonoscopy all they found was a polp that was bleeding, they snipped it off while they were at it and that was the end of the bleeding. What a relief.

We always expect the worst but it isn't always the case.

I feel your pain, it's absolute hell not knowing and your mind running away with itself.

Both times I was never constipated! Maybe this could be the cause of your stomach ache.

Let me know how you go and I'm here for a chat.

  • Thank you for sharing your story!! So sorry to hear you've had it twice!! What an apt username, I completely agree you more than deserve a break!!

But you're exactly right in that I'm not you, and I shouldnt be looking to compare symptoms just to find something to make me feel justified at thinking I got cancer, cause that's exactly what I been doing. My mum died when i was 9, of cancer, and I've always thought itd be my fate too so I get bit carried away with myself! I've always thought the tummy ache was the constipation, and that's what could easily be causing thickening of bowel wall too!

I feel more optimistic today... tomorrow is the procedure and today I get to starve myself (yeyy haha!)

Thank you for taking time to reply to me, it's really helped!!!

I am so pleased your last results were clear, sounds like you've had a long hard road!! Xx
