Biopsy results

Hello,

I am hoping to get some advice around biopsy results It's a long one, so apologies in advance

My 8 year old son had a fall and hurt his knee, he wasn't able to walk on it so we took him to A&E for it to be checked

There were no breaks, however they found a 'growth' on his femur. We were sent for an MRI within a few days, no one could work out what it was so he was sent for a biopsy. He had that on 17.11.20

We are now a few weeks on with no calls from the hospital. So I have been chasing up results and have been told he was discussed in the MDT meeting however they have gone back to the lab for further investigation

I don't know if it is standard process for all bone lesions but I am to liaise with the 'Sarcoma' team? The MDT is the 'Sarcoma MDT'.

Has anyone had any dealing with this before? I am obviously worried about my son and not really getting any answers or advice from the hospital

thank you for reading

  • Hello Hsmummy

I'm sorry to hear about your son's accident and the subsequent growth that was found. I can imagine that it's been an incredibly worrying time for you.

It's common practice for biopsy results to be discussed at an MDT. The MDT comprises specialist doctors and nurses, who meet regularly to establish that every patient's diagnosis is correctly made, based on blood and tissue samples, X-rays and scans. They will then discuss and recommend the best form of treatment based on local and national guidelines and on each individual patient's circumstances.

It sounds as if at this point the team are uncertain about what this lump actually is hence why they have gone back to pathology for more information.

I know from posts here on the forum that it's not uncommon for an MDT to ask for more information before making a diagnosis but obviously this can lead to more worry for the people involved.

I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat things through with one of our team of nurses. I'm sure they would be able to offer you some advice and information whilst you're waiting for news from the hospital. If you'd like to speak to them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you have some news soon. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
