Advice needed - Worried about rectal bleeding

Hello,

I am a 23 year old woman, and I have been experiencing bleeding from my anus for around 3 months now. It started in september after a bout of constipation. I put it down to constipation at the time, but I continued to bleed after each bowel movement. At the start it was not painful, it was just painless bleeding. A few weeks ago after it hadn't gone away on its own after trying home treatment, I went to the doctors where they examined me and said they thought it was piles and abit of IBS and nothing to worry about because of my age. I had blood tests done and they came back normal. Well I am still bleeding after each bowel movement and now it has gotten painful, whether the stool is soft or abit harder (constipation) and I am just concerned. I am concerned it has gone on for this long and that there hasn't been any further tests offered to rule out anything serious. I know we are in a pandemic but if there is something seriously wrong I would like to find out sooner rather than later.

Has anyone experienced this for this long? Do you have any advice on how to help it or what to ask my doctor or what specialist to see?
Thank you

  • Hello Chaz,

bleeding can be due to many reasons, and once triggered the bowel can take quite a time to heal, since its in full time use.Perhaps look back and think of any trigger for the intial onst, diet, stress?.Its good that you have seen your doctor and have a raised awareness, but l would say look for any significant change in bowel habits,if the blood goes from bright red to black,or you get more pain, then get right back to your doctor for more tests.

it is very worrying to see discharged blood ,bear in mind that stress could make some causes worse and trigger a flare up,so try to remain calm and focused.Hope it gets better for you in the future,

  • Hi Chaz,

I can relate to what you are going through as I have had this problem on and off. I also got checked out, bloodwork, etc.. and mine was diagnosed as fissures, probably from straining during bowel movements. Anyway, the doctor prescribed some ointment that seemed to do the trick. It takes time for the fissures to heal up because they are irritated every time you go.  Maybe you can ask for something like that, some ointment? I also agree with David, if it gets worse or changes, definitely get back in to see the doctor.
