GIST and growth in liver

Hi all,

this is my first post. I had my gallbladder removed in February 2018. I experienced stomach issues for 18 months such as cramping and diarrhoea, which my GP said was a side effect of the surgery. It was so bad I was having toilet accidents. I'm June 2019 I was diagnosed with severe Bile Acid Malabsorption and given a medication call colesevelam which did relieve my symptoms along with eating a low fat diet. Always had my bloods checked routinely with high ALT levels, but they told me they didn't know what was causing it. All of 2020 I have suffered with pain when swallowing, acid reflux and abdominal pain. Had an ultrasound in august which came back clear. They had me taking omeprazole for months which didn't work. Had an endoscopy on 16th October which was a failed attempt as my stomach was full of food even though I had fasted. It was rebooked for 27th November and fasted for nearly 20 hours. Stomach was clear of food, but was advised that they had found a 10cm GIST in the upper fundus of my stomach and didn't know what it was. Two biopsies taken and was told an urgent CT scan would be ordered. Was contacted by a Macmillan Upper GI Cancer nurse on 30th November who said that an MDT meeting was being held on 7th December and I would be sent for a CT scan. This was done the following day.

been so nervous, so called my nurse yesterday evening and left her a voicemail. I was called yesterday evening saying that an urgent MRI scan of my liver had to be booked which I have tomorrow as well as bloods.

my nurse called me back today and said that it is a GIST but that they thought it was benign. I asked if the biopsy results were back and she said no. I said she couldn't really tell me then unless the results of the biopsies were analysed. She said they have found a growth in my liver which is growing into the wall of my stomach.

I am absolutely petrified and trying to be strong. The waiting is eating me up inside. I did ask her if she could follow up on my biopsy results as I need to know what this is so a plan can be put in place and I can get my head around it, she said that she will come back to me before the weekend.

I love Christmas, and my birthday is 23rd December but I just can't look forward to it at the moment. I have lost nearly half a stone in 4 weeks without even trying and my food in take is exactly the same, and I have maintained my weight for almost a year.

has anyone else had experiences of a GIST and also had a growth in their liver? I try not to looo it up on google but I can't help it.

any advice or tips in staying positive would really be appreciated x

  • Hello,

My brother was diagnosed with stage 4 Metastatic GIST three years ago. Because his GIST had spread from his stomach to the liver, he didn’t have an operation but was treated with targeted drugs. He started with Gleevec, which worked really well to shrink his tumour but only lasted a year before the drugs became ineffective. Then he went on a clinical trial but was given the drugs that are already on the market, sinitunib. Again that only lasted a year. Then he was given third line drugs ragrofenib which didn’t agree with him and sadly he passed away last month. On the positive side, there is a new drug which DCC 2618 which is still on trial in the uk but approved in the USA which have lots of positive reviews. Also, everyone reacts differently to these drugs and there have people who are on these drugs and still living for many years.

Wishing you all the very best.
