Head and Neck Cancer

Hi,

My husband was diagnosed with cancer on his vocal chord last New Year's Eve.  It was staged as T1 and was told by the consultant that he had a 95% survival rate and that it was treatable.  He had radiotherapy in February and cme through the treatment well.  Due to Covid lockdowns etc over the last few months he was not able to see his consultant until the end of September whereupon he was told after having a camera down his throat that everything was clear.  My husband however was experiencing pain in his ear and the consultant sent him for an ultrasound and he recceived a letter to say everything was fine and there was nothing sinister and hoped that this alleviated his fears.  About a couple of weeks ago he had an emergencyappointment at the ENT Department as he was experiencing a hacking cough, sore throat, generally feeeling unwell, fatigue, croaky voice and chocking on his food and drinks. He did not see his usual consultant but another member of the team who proceeded to put the camera down and found that his throat was inflamed and said that he would arrange for tests under anesthetic.  He went in last week and it was disclosed on his discharge sheet that there was a lesion on the same vocal chord and on the subglotti.  No one came from the medical team to see him after his procedure and he was just sent out with no explanation or medication for any pain that he may encounter.

He has now received today an appointment to go for a CT/MRI scan a few days before Christmas. I am so scared that the cancer is back and wondered whether anyone else has been through the same. or could it be something else.  The consultant thought that the problems he was experiencing could be damage caused by his radiotherapy and said so both at his appointment and his procedure.

At the end of my tether as I cannot get my head round why he was told 5-6 weeks ago everything was fine and we are now in this horrible position.

  • Welcome to the forum Noddy although I'm sorry to read what has happened.

As you've said in your post this is a horrible situation to be in, especially in the run-up to Christmas, but fingers crossed the results of your husband's upcoming tests will confirm the consultant's suspicions and not be another cancer diagnosis.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar predicament will get back to you soon but if you think it might be helpful to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m

Best wishes to you both and fingers crossed for a positive outcome,
