Swollen Lymph nodes for over 6 years, age 21

Hi everyone,

So, my fiancé has had 3 swollen lymph nodes behind his ear for at least 6 years now. One is just to the side of his hairline and I would guess is about 1.5cm or so and the other two are next to each other and slightly further down from the first, probably around 1cm each. They're all fairly mobile and feel firm but not rock hard. He's had no other symptoms whatsoever and they haven't changed or increased in size for the entire 6 years that he's known about them.

He's 21, a healthy weight and has no other medical issues whatsoever. I, however, have Health Anxiety and  was worried about these swollen nodes when I first saw them at the beginning of our relationship but he reassured me that they caused him no problems so we just left them. In the past couple of days or so though they've been really bothering me. I know googling symptoms is never a good idea but literally all that comes up is Lymphoma.

I had a feel in his neck last night just to check if there were anymore that were swollen and I found another one on the right side of his Adam's Apple. It's not visible, but it can be felt quite easily. I would guess that it's around 1cm, not huge at all, and is also mobile. The problem is, finding another node swollen has pretty much cemented my fears that this is something more sinister. We don't know how long this node has been there as last night was my first time feeling for them.

I've encouraged him to visit the doctor and hopefully get to the bottom of this but I'm just looking for any reassurance at all that this isn't lymphoma. If it does turn out to be that I'm guessing it's a slow-growing, indolent form due to the lack of symptoms and the length of time that the nodes have been enlarged. The only issue with that is, I thought Hodgkin's lymphoma was the most common lymphoma for young people to get and I think that's pretty fast growing?

Anyway, any help would be appreciated. Thank you,

Jodie

  • Hello Jodie and welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately no-one here can say whether this is lymphoma or not, but it's good you encouraged your fiance to get the lymph nodes checked as the doctor is the only person who can give you the answers and reassurance you're seeking.

I'm not sure when your fiance is having his appointment but I hope it goes well and that the lymph nodes are no cause for concern.

    Kind regards,
