Breast pain and numb left arm

I have an appt with the breast clinic on the 14th December.
I have been experiencing severe breast pain in my left breast that has now given me a dead arm on the same side too. This started a round the end of October when my period ended. It did briefly go away when I had my period end of last month? But is now back with a vengeance.
I have a strong family history of breast cancer and was referred to the breast clinic for yearly mammograms, my last one was in Feb which was clear. When I was first referred (2 years ago) I was told I had nodular breasts and fibrocystic changes too.
My question is can nodular breasts and fibrocystic changes cause this amount of pain? It is so painful most of the time. I am on noproxen for the pain but it doesn't touch it.
Could this intense pain be the start of something else? I can't help thinking the worst - I'm a single mother to a four year old and I can't stop worrying and crying about what the future may hold .

I lost my own mother 3 years ago so it's still very raw and I don't feel I have anyone to talk too as I need to keep happy and upbeat for my daughter.
any advice would be greatly received.
thank you x

  • Hi MRO,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sure this must be unsettling and a difficult wait for information about this. I'm also sorry to read about your mother.

Unfortunately I'm unable to advise on your question, but I would encourage you to ask this - and any other questions you have - at your appointment.

Try to keep yourself busy while you wait, to help keep your mind off things.

We are always here for support on this forum and it's always a safe space to write down your thoughts or concerns, especially if you feel you don't have others to talk to.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • How are you ?
I'm going through a similar situation and also lost my mum 18mths ago.
I have had pain in my breast and armpit for 5 months now.  I have had normal mammogram and blood tests but have persisted with Gp as the pain hasn't resolved.  Saw consultant today who said my breast feels nodular compared to the other.  He has requested for me to have a scan.
    I'm petrified ....

  • Hi,

I'm so sorry about your mum, it's just so hard.

I totally understand you being so scared. I've been a total mess.

I had 3 appts in the end at the breast clinic,  one with the consultant, I then had to go back for a mammogram and then an ultrasound after I had my period. The lady who did the ultrasound said that she could see no changes and nothing to be worried about on any of my scans or on my mammogram either.

I am still in pain and have numbness most days in my arm.
I now do not speak to my breast consultant until February for a telephone consultation. I am going to try and book in with the GP in the new year to see if they have any sort of explanation as to what's causing this, and hopefully get some sort of pain management.

Hopefully your scan should come through soon and you can get to the bottom of things. The only piece of advice I can give is to stay away from google - it's so easy to be drawn into that dark hole and diagnose yourself with all sorts. Wishing you lots of luck and sending strength. I hope it all works out well for you x

  • How are you doing

I'm still in the same predicament and feel like the breast consultant has gone through breast pain one too many times now ! My examinations are all normal and mammogram and scan all normal too

the pain is in my breast and shoulder, just will not ease

    lots of love xx

  • Hi, I'm so sorry to hear you are still experiencing problems.
My pain radiated into my armpit, and got to a point where I was struggling to lift my arm, my arm and hand were both totally bind most of the time too. I went back to the doctors who queried that I may have pulled something or injured it in some way. I wore a wrist splint for the first 3 months of the year and that really helped with the numbness in my hand and arm. I am now awaiting on nerve compression testing ..... no idea how long that will take as everything is delayed due to the pandemic?

The pain in my breast, arm and armpit isn't constant anymore and really does only flare up now when my period is due so I'm more or less convinced it's hormonal as all mammogrammes and ultrasounds are all still clear.
I hope you get some answers or at least some relief soon.
    much love xx

  • Hi there, I was interested to come across your recent post. As I have suffered with left breast pain and numbness for 12 months now. It isn't constant but comes every month...

At the moment even trying to close my arm feels difficult. It's so dead and numb. My fingers are tingling too.

Just wondered how you are getting on at the moment? I had an ultrasound September last year and nothing to be seen on there but this is driving me mad. The numbness is affecting my quality of life every month.

Any advice appreciated...GP always puts it down to a pulled muscle etc..xx

  • Hi both,

I've come across your threat after having the very same symptoms and in my left arm.

I can feel a lump, and my breast is quite painful all the time, I have also noticed pins and needles down my left arm particularly in my hand.

I have had this checked out but felt the professional was quite dismissive saying I have breast pain and given a leaflet over 6 months ago.

im still not happy about it it worries me daily... but I wanted to ask if you had your Covid jab and it could have correlated to when you experienced the pains?

I only ask as this is when I first noticed my pain after my second jab my lymph nodes noticeably swelled.. just wondering if this maybe the root cause... seems odd we all have in the same arm?

    thanks
