Lump

Hi all

I found a lump on my breast last week, went to the doctors only thinking it was the size of a pea for her to tell me it was 2cm. My breast is swollen and really dense comparred to the other one, shes sent an urgent refferal the the breast clinc and im just wondering how long did it take for you guys to get you appointment? Im only 25 and im a conplete mess i cant stop worrying x

  • Hi Becky,

so sorry to hear that you have these symptoms! I had an urgent referral and where I live that means you have to get an appointment within two weeks. The referral was made and then a week and 2 days later I get a call giving me an appointment for 3 days after that. So for me my appointment was just under 2 weeks after I was referred.

My appointment was just for a suspected fibroadenoma (non worrying growth) that just needed to be confirmed so I'm not sure if that played a part in the amount of time until I had the appointment as my case wasn't actually urgent it was just policy. Thankfully I did have an appointment though as they ended up finding something else that needed a biopsy.

I'm not sure if they do appointments based on urgency but hopefully you will get your appointment very soon as I understand you must be going out of your mind with worry! I wish you all the best and hope that you have some answers soon! Good luck x

  • Hi Becky,

It is a scary time,  but I'm reading so many breast lumps turn out to all be ok so trying myself to focus on that.

I found two lumps last weekend, I was referred then on Monday by the doctor , told it would be within two weeks but actually it will be over 5 weeks as appointment has come through for Jan.  I'm assuming this is to do with staff shortages and Christmas too.  Not very happy about it, we have a history of breast cancer within family and seems a long time to wait.  Trying to remain positive though.

  • Hi Sarah,

I'm so sorry to hear that! I think at the minuet with corona and it being Christmas time, waiting times are becoming quite long. Obviously I understand that the hospital cannot do anything about it but it's absolutely horrible for the people effected and 5 weeks is an incredibly long time to wait I'm so sorry!

I was referred late October and had my appointment early November so think I missed the Christmas rush but I was told I would have my biopsy results within 2 weeks and it's been over 4 now!

Obviously I wasn't worried for my appointment at the breast clinic as I was originally going for a fibroadenoma so I can't imagine how you must be feeling! I know it's easier said than done but try to distract yourself however you can and try to enjoy your Christmas. I know you must be uncomfortable as you are swollen. Was your breast swollen when you saw the doctor or did that appear after?

  • 5 weeks is a very long time, i have history in mine too... im praying that it turns our to be okay. Yes this whole covid 19 is putting everything back.. hoow your okay and stay strong x

  • Im hoping i get the appointment through soon, i have no clue what will even happen in the appointment i think thats the more worrying thing... ive a history of breat cancer in the family my cousin had it when she was around my age too... just praying that it turns out to be nothing x

  • Hi [@Becky25]‍

so sorry to hear that you have been referred to the Breast clinic! It may be different in other breast clinics but for me I saw a doctor who asked a few questions and then did an examination of my breasts and then circled the problem areas that he wanted scanned. That was very quick only took 5 minutes then went for an ultrasound this took a while longer to get done (I think because she was deciding if I needed a biopsy). Then I had a biopsy. Some people get a mammogram instead of an ultrasound and some get both. I think I was told younger people normally get an ultrasound instead of a mammogram. You will only have a biopsy if they think it is needed. I had the biopsy done by the same woman who do the ultrasound and I didn't have to wait she did it straight away. There are 3 different biopsy's that can be done I had a core needle biopsy's which took about 10 minutes and didn't hurt apart from the numbing but even that was just a pinch x

I hope that helped it can be different in other clinics but that's what I experienced. Overal it wasn't too long and everyone was very nice, the only little thing that hurt was the numbing for the biopsy. Hopefully now you know a little more about what you can expect I understand you must be so worried given the fact you have a family history too! Good luck with everything ! X
