22 with breast cancer?!

Hi everyone,

I am out of my mind with worry. I'm a 22 year old woman and I check my breasts every month. 4 days ago I found a pea sized lump on the bottom outer part of my right breast, next to my nipple. I went to the doctor and she said it feels smooth and moveable. To me it feels like a sort of hard spot/lump under the skin? She said as I am on my period, I cannot be referred for 2 more weeks. If it changes or is still there and I'm worried in 2 weeks, she will refer me.

I am so so scared that I have breast cancer and that it's spreading while I wait, and that I'm going to die at 22.

I guess I'm just posting for some advice/reassurance because I'm going crazy.

hope you're all ok.

  • Hi [@Worried22yearold]‍,

Take a deep breath and try and rationalise this right now. I've had to try and teach myself how to cope with my anxieties over the past few months as I have convinced myself I have lymphoma or breast cancer. I was convinced I had breast cancer BEFORE I even had symptoms and coincidentally, months later after prodding, poking and obsessing over my breasts I found something. Breast clinic appointment is on Tuesday.

Once you discover something, our minds go into overdrive and we convince ourselves that we will be dead imminently.

You have taken the right step by visiting your GP. First step done!

Please don't panic yourself too much as this will make matters worse. Although younger people can develop breast cancer, age is on your side. I'm 25 and everything you're explaining I was feeling too believe me. I still am some days.

Hopefully your lump is hormone related! Xxx

  • Hi [@Worried22yearold]‍

Hopefully I can help you try to relax a little bit. I'm in no way trying to say that there is no possible way you could have cancer or that you are not allowed to be worried because you are and it's completely normal to be worried!

so younger people are more susceptible to getting lumps and bumbs in their boobs because of hormones and all that fun stuff! Especially around our periods, sometimes your period can cause lumps in your breast and these lumps can appear a little bit before our period starts. This is why your doctor cannot refer you to the breast clinic yet.

Younger people also can gets these things called fibroadenomas which are non worrying lumps in the breast. Fibroadenomas are usually between 1-3cm and are smooth lumps that can be moved under the skin which is probably why your doctor mentioned that is was smooth and moveable as this may (but not definitely) indicate a fibroadenoma.

There are many other things that your lump could be such as a cyst or something like that. Once again I am not telling you all this to belittle your feelings and concerns as it's completely normal to have them I just wanted to tell you all of these things so that you know that there are many things that this could be and most breast lumps are not cancer. You where right to go to the doctor though as any lump found should be checked out and I am sure that if the lump is still there in 2 weeks you will be referred even if they don't suspect anything serious is wrong it still needs to be checked.

I am very young and felt a lump in my best and assumed it was a fibroadenoma and put off getting it checked for over 6 months so it's so good that you have gone in.

when I did get is checked she said to me that she wasn't worried and that it was a fibroadenoma but everyone over 18 with a breast lump needs to be referred just to confirm so I am sure that they will refer you if the lump is still there after 2 weeks.

and once again I'm not saying that young people shouldn't get their lumps checked and that they should just assume it's harmless, you should always get them checked. Thankfully I did go to the doctors as the lump was confirmed as a fibroadenoma but they found another growth on the scan that couldn't be felt that needed a biopsy. That isn't me trying to scare you I just want you to know that you did do the right thing getting it checked! And please know that if you do go to the breast clinic and need a biopsy that doesn't definitely mean cancer either, most breast biopsy's come back clear!

i hope that this post helped you! I'm sorry if I made things worse or made you feel any type of way I just wanted to reassure you that its okay to be worried, it's normal to be worried and that you did the right thing but also wanted to give you some information on other things that this could be. I wish you all the best and hope that everything works out for you x
