Mole on Foot - First time getting photos

Hi Everyone,

First time ever posting here. Just feeling I need a community insight / advice.

I have had numerous moles across my body since I was small, they've arrived on and off over the years. I have them in all weird and wonderful places. I have always had one mole on my foot since I could ever remember, then a few years ago (along with others across my body) one sprung up on the arch of my foot. While a little different, it never has concerned me and after losing a relative to skin cancer and my mother have a variation of it, I have always been skin aware.

Over the few years I have observed it and feel there has been no change. However after my mum passed away last year (unrelated to cancers) and my family grew with my son, I had a new perspective on life. So felt I would look into mole mapping.

A few months ago I asked my GP who (to my surprise) without seeing put new in for a referral to a dermatologist. He looked me over and generally said they were in good shape. However he was interested in the newer one on my foot....only about 3mm. I went for my photos the following day and now we wait.

I have a habit of worrying and reading about acral lentiginous melanoma and so on has left me nervous. Information is complicated and scarce. I was show a close up of the mole during the photos and I find myself comparing. My imagination is running wild and at only 30, I can't help but feel if all is well, this may be the first bag of nerves of many as I go through annual checks.

Just looking for advice from anyone with experiences of this. While you see moles on people's faces and arms, you don't often see people's soles and palms, so never know how common it is.

Thanks, Matt

  • I didn't need a skin graft. You need to keep your foot elevated for at least 48 hours to help the wound settle down & to stop any bleeding. After that you need to keep off your foot for a few more days if possible. I hobbled around the house for a week and then slowly started to put my weight on it once the stitches were due out. Depending on where exactly on the foot the excisions are done will depend on if they give you any crutches to use for the first couple of weeks - if you are having two removed I would ask for crutches if they are not offered! Mine was on the arch of my foot so I didn't need them. You won't be driving for at least a week if not more. xx

  • Ah brilliant thanks for the information. These are all things I was wondering about! X

  • Hi there,  just a quick update as you were so kind to reply. I had my removal a week ago,  they removed both moles on the sole of my foot in one large excision.  I had the dressing changed today and I'd say the wound is around 3 inches long. I ordered crutches online and have been using these ever since.  I am unable to weight bear as it's still so painful. The plastic surgeon today said I should be trying to put some weight through it now but that currently feels impossible! I don't want to rush things (as he says he doesn't want my stitches to pop) but by the same token I hope I'm not creating problems for my recovery by not trying to walk a bit on it now. I'm so confused! The stitches are dissolving ones so I've to keep this new dressing on for 5 days and still keep it dry. I've no further follow-up now other than the biopsy results. I just don't know if I'm doing the right thing staying off it so much.  He said I've to rest it another week and keep my foot elevated when seated. The whole foot is still very bruised and swollen.
