Worried my gp is wrong

Im 18 and i have been suffering with swollen tonsils for nearly a year and have been prescribed penicillin 4 times which didn't work. I then went to see my gp face to face and he has reffered me to a ENT but the wait is two months and i feel he has underestimated what is wrong. My symptoms are swollen tonsils ( one larger than the other ), bumps in the back if my throat, swollen lymphnode ( around 3 weeks ) and acid reflux. Anybody have any idea what could be wrong and cause these symptoms? Cant stop worrying.

  • Hello Tommyyy

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having some ongoing health concerns over the past year. It's understandable that you're feeling concerned about why things have not been resolved despite multiple courses of medication.

It's good to hear that your GP has referred you on to a specialist. I'm sure they will have documented your symptoms and the treatment that you've received to date in the referral letter. Typically when the letter is received at the hospital it is triaged by a specialist Dr who will decide the urgency that the patient needs to be seen. This isn't something that the GP decides.

I can understand that waiting two months to be seen seems like a very long way off. Unfortunately with the current Covid19 pandemic we know that many people are having to wait far longer than they would usually and this can cause more anxiety for the patient.

It may be worth getting in touch with your hospital to see if they have a cancellation list. If you were able to attend an appointment at short notice then you may be seen sooner.

You might also like to have a look at the NHS Every Mind Matters website for some tips and hints on helping you to manage your feelings whilst you're waiting for your appointment.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for an appointment but if in the meantime your symptoms change, do get in touch with your GP.

    Best wishes,
