22 scared of bowel cancer

Hello, I'm a female and just turned 22 in October. I feel terrible posting in here but I'm going out of my mind with worry. A few weeks ago I had really bad watery diarrhea (TMI) when I looked in the toilet I noticed quite a few drops of blood around the toilet, I checked and noticed it was coming from my rectum. I went to A&E and they checked my stomach and rectum and said I was fine (I took a picture of the blood to show them). Since then I have been obsessed with looking at my stools after I've been and have noticed that they're all very thin and have a bloody type mucus around them. This has me petrified. I went to my Doctors and they did numerous blood tests (Complete CBC, Kidney and Liver function, CEA markers) They also did two stool samples one for parasites and the other a Faecal Calprotectin. No parasites but the Faecal Calprotectin came back at 127. I'm petrified and have been sent for an urgent colonoscopy (haven't got dates yet) but I'm so scared it's unreal, it's all I think about. I also keep getting shooting pains around my right rib area and to the right of my belly button and also lower abdominal pain. Along with bad heartburn at night (this has been the past few nights) I don't know if this is anxiety and me being heighten about everything I am feeling but just needed somewhere to get everything I'm feeling off my chest.
Thanks x

  • Hello Roman9

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some health problems recently. It's understandable that you're anxious about what may be causing your symptoms.

Having a raised faecal calprotectin suggests there is some inflammation which is why your GP has requested further tests. There could be many reasons for the raised markers but we know that this period of uncertainty whilst waiting for tests can be difficult for many people.

You might find it helpful to talk things through with one of our team of nurses. I'm sure they will be able to give you some reassurance and support ahead of your colonoscopy. If you'd like to talk to them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,

  • Just had a phone consultation with the hospital and they explained everything that's going to happen. They mentioned that the two week referral is because my symptoms are very worrying. I've been having really bad heart burn these past few days and she randomly asked that on the phone so now my head is spiralling and I'm convinced I have cancer. It's just very hard to take all this in at the moment. I feel like I'm going crazy and have a death sentence on my back and I'm just waiting for confirmation. I keep trying to calm myself down but it's just not working. I just want it over and done with now I think the waiting to find out is the worst part.

  • Hi,

Sorry I don't have any words of help because I'm going through the same thing, I'm so upset and can't stop crying. I'm convinced myself I've got it because my Dad had it. I've got the blood tests and stool sample too. I've joined this chat today although I've been reading for weeks. I've had blood in my stool for a while but only just had it checked because I was convinced it was just hemorids

  • Hey! I completely understand. Can I ask what your symptoms are? And what your test results come back? Reading online is the worst! I've sent myself crazy reading different stories online!

  • I've not got results back from stool and bloods but the Doctor did and internal exam and said there was no blood or hemoriods which I was hoping it was. She felt my stomach and couldn't feel anything.

I've had blood streaked in my stools for months now (I know I'm stupid for not getting it checked out sooner) when I've been to toilet it still feels like I need to go (this has been for the last 2 weeks) lots of gas. Also bloody very loose stools again over the past 2 weeks which has made me visit the Doctor. I'm convinced myself it's serious and got worse because of the new symptoms

When is you next appointment? x

  • My bloods were normal but my faecal calprotectin (stool test) showed inflammation. That's the only reason they actually sent me for a colonoscopy. I literally had to beg for tests to be done because all the kept saying "was you're too young". It honestly could be so many different things, I've read so many stories of people with the same symptoms having a colonoscopy and getting the all clear or being diagnosed with something benign but our minds always focus on the stories that are bad. My appointment should be in the next two weeks, they're going to send off the prep (which I've heard is the worst part) and a letter with dates on. If you're not satisfied with the care you're getting ask for a second opinion and push for further tests to help ease your mind because the stressing and worrying is horrid x

  • I'm suffering with daily panic attacks now because I'm so worried. My symptoms fit every red flag. I just don't know how I'm going to cope with it, and know it's my fault for not getting checked sooner.

Please keep in touch though and let me know how your colonoscopy goes x

  • I've been the same! Really bad can't stop crying, I'm taking it out on everyone! But I'm just so frustrated not knowing! It's better to go back and explain that you want a referral so you can get sorted and I did the same I left it because I though "oh it'll be nothing" but decided to get checked out and I'll hopefully find out what the problem is.
I'll update you once I've found out my colonoscopy dates x

  • Got my colonoscopy scheduled for Monday afternoon! I'm a bit worried that it's come around so soon but at least I'll find out what is wrong. So prepping on Sunday night. Currently at A&E though with really bad abdominal pain and struggling to breathe. Not sure if it's stress but thankful I'll have some answers by Monday.

  • Hey! Just letting you know I had my colonoscopy and everything was fine no cancer as the doc said! He said he was confused at where the bleeding was coming from but did some biopsies (he told me they always do this). He said for thinks such as crohns and IBD. He also was able to get into my small interstine and said that looked fine. X
