Subungual Melanoma

Hello,

I've had a purple/black toenail for almost two months now, I've not bumped it or dropped anything on it. So I finally went to see my Dr today, he completely ruled out any infections (which I thought it was) and said he is going to refer me to a dermatologist and will have a biopsy to test for cancerous cells, within an hour i recieved a text for my first hospital appointment on 16th December.. anyone who has been through similar what happens at the first appointment and how is the biopsy usually carried out? I refuse to use Google for the answer!

I'm sorry to hear that you're waiting on a Consultant appointment at the moment. I know that many of our members here will understand how difficult this period of waiting for appoints and tests can be. It's good to hear that you have your appointment date and you don't have to wait too long to see the specialist.

I'm afraid I can't second guess what might happen at the appointment. Expert clinical examination is an important element in any dermatology assessment and often they will tell you what they think just from taking a look - they can use a little device to magnify things as well as the naked eye.  Sometimes dermatologists want to take a small tissue biopsy or scrape off some cells to send away to the laboratory as well,  so this could be a possibility,  but if they do they numb the area first and this doesn't always happen on the day.

If you'd like to talk through your concerns with one of our team of nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

    Best wishes,
