Endoscopic EMR

I've recently had a colonoscpy which showed a large polyp 35mm in a tricky place in the corner of the colon. I have been referred to another hospital under the Complex polyp team. I have a telephone consultation next Monday regarding an EMR. Has anyone experienced this and was you asleep. I'm terrified of having anything down my throat and know I won't tolerate it.

  • Hello Bozzo and a big welcome to Cancer Chat!

I am sorry to hear about this large polyp in the corner of your colon. I hope the phone consultation goes well on Monday and that you find out more about this endoscopic EMR.  In the meantime, I thought I would share this information with you from our website on the endoscopic mucosal resection. Apparently according to our page on the EMR, "an anaesthetist puts a small tube (canula) into your vein in your arm or hand. They attach a drip to this that contains a sedative. It takes a few minutes for you to go to sleep. Some people need to have the procedure under a general anaesthetic. Your doctor will tell you if you need this."  So hopefully you will hear more on Monday about the type of anaesthetic you will receive.

I hope the procedure goes well and that you hear from others here who have had an EMR before and who will be happy to share their experience with you. Feel free also to give our nurses a call. They will be happy to answer questions you may have on the procedure so don't hesitate to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope your phone consultation tomorrow goes well! Keep us updated on what you find out if you get a moment.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you

I'm going in on Mon 7th of Dec. I'm having sedation but not going to sleep and use of gas and air. I'm not having the tube down my throat but I'm having the colonoscpy and I've been advised it will take longer than my previous one. My low residue diet starts tomorrow and I'm just eager to get it over and done with. I'm just hoping that it's not cancerous and that once the polyp is out that will be that.
