Tongue Lump

Hi

I have been referred to a head and neck rapid access clinic due to a lump on my tongue that has been steadily growing for the last 3 months.

the lump is around 5mm long and is on the left side of my tongue.
It is white and pink in colour.

Has anyone had one similar? Was it cancer?

I was prescribed anti biotics but they didn't help.

I have some questions that I am looking for the answer too if anyone is able to help.

what will happen at my first appointment?
will they do a biopsy or will I be called back for it?
will I have any scans?

I suffer from anxiety/panic disorder and ptsd and all of this is really triggering for me.

im hoping someone can provide some reassurance

  • Hello of course I don't mind . Mine started last August with what I thought was a sore throat , for the silly reason that my husband was just getting over cancer of the voice box Idid not  think to seek medical help as this doesn't strike twice in one family ! Wrong ... anyway I eventually went to the doctor at the end of December , he put me on the urgent two week wait for the ENT anyway that appointment was scheduled for almost a months time so I decided to go privately. The first appointment he put a camera down and couldn't see anything at all , so decided on a biopsy , I had the biopsy a week later and from that biopsy it showed pre cancer ! As he was just about to say go away these things tend to clear up but we will watch it, I then said but look I have lumps on both sides of my neck ...Oh! He said well we better go for an MRI and from that I was found to have a very deep stage 4 ( mouth cancer isn't actually staged so don't be alarmed ) Basel carcinoma cancer at the base of my tongue . Obviously when he did my biopsy he didn't go deep enough. As I also had lumps in my neck I had an ultrasound & a ct scan , the cancer was also in my lymph nodes , these lumps were very obvious to me by touch and also this cancer had probably been growing for 6 months or more .
I then went back to the NHS to be treated , I was not a candidate for surgery as the cancer was too deep and my oncologist said it would be too nasty , so I would have 6 weeks of daily high dose radiotherapy... I don't want to go into that if yours isn't cancer , but of course I will if you later ask me too... I just want you to know a couple of things .

    1. This cancer has a very , very good outcome BUT the treatment can be brutal

2 if it is cancer and You see like I did Stage 3 or 4 this is not the same as if you were being staged for say breast cancer , the number is to do with the size of the tumour .
    3. The worst thing I did was join Facebook throat cancer sites

    4. The best thing I did was delete them !

5 usually you have weekly chemotherapy alongside the radiotherapy but because of Covid I didn't have this , but apparently it only mops things up .

6 if it turns out you do have cancer your case will be looked at by more than one oncologist it will go to a panel and discussed and the best possible treatment will be mapped out for you .

I have asked you for a friends request , I am more than happy to help you throughout this journey especially if you do have cancer as during and after treatment is when you will need someone who knows what you are going through to talk to .

all my fingers and toes are crossed for you . BUT remember you will be ok . X x x

Ps you may not have cancer & if you do your treatment may differ from mine & the last thing I would ever want to do is scare you with talk of something that may never happen . Also I keep remembering things I had biopsies on my lymph nodes whilst I was having the ultrasound. X
