Leukemia

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

I'm a 36 year old woman, two weeks ago I had a routine blood test as I was/am struggling to breathe, excessive bleeding and very tired, my blood test came back with a very high platelet count, my doctor called and asked me to do a full blood test which I did last Thursday. Friday morning he calls and says the platelets are still high and I also have high c reactive protein? He asked me to come straight in checked my lymph nodes (these are sometimes up for no reason) he advised that if I was older he would be very concerned but im young and that he was going to refer me to see a heamotologist and take things from there, he wouldn't tell me what was wrong just that I should try not to lose sleep ‍♀️ (easy for him to say) is this leukemia? Everything ive read is pointing to cancer but there is no help or direction just nothing, im worried x

  • Hi,

Raised platelets and CRP can be an inflammatory response so could be just that, but we always need to rule out more sinister causes hence the referral to haematology for their opinion.
try not to worry and don't google as google always says the worst. How soon do you see/speak to haematology? X

  • Thank you so much for replying Angelina.

I've read about inflammatory response, my doctor said the platelet count had been raising over the last year (I have a neurological disorder so have regular blood tests) ill definetly stop checking Google, just very concerned. He didn't say when the appointment was just that he was trying to get the appointment soon. Appreciate your response, thank you x

  • That's reassuring that it has been rising over the past 12 months ... rather than a sharp isolated rise.
If you are still worried, consider speaking to

your GP again see if they can explain further for you. Definitely worth it if you're worried. Good luck xx

  • I had my follow up after blood test etc and have been diagnosed with essential thrombocythaemia (ET) a rare blood cancer. Any advice would be great

  • Hello DevonsMum

I just wanted to pop and signpost you to some information that we have here on our website about essential thrombocythaemia.

We do have quite a few members here on the forum living with ET and I'm sure that if you comment on this thread or this thread that you will get some responses and be able to connect with others who have the same diagnosis.

I'm also going to suggest you give our team of nurses a call. I'm sure they will be happy to talk things through with you and offer some advice and support. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
