Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • Hi Darthies
I think most of us have just had a blood test and an ultrasound scan to be on the safe side, followed by reassurance. My lymph node came up and was rubbery and moveable after each vaccine, both AstraZeneca x 2 and Pfizer booster on the same day as the flu vaccine.

I had a CT scan for something else last year (abdominal pains) that resulted in no treatment being needed. Hope yours will be the same.

  • Thank you so do I But I'm gearing the worst

  • I know it's really hard (having been through lots of cancer treatments around 6 years ago), and I am not great at this myself, but try to distract yourself by filling the not-knowing time up with doing and thinking about other things while waiting for results. For me at least, it's the the fearing and the waiting that is worse than something actually happening or not happening to you .... A countryside walk, music, painting or even colouring, dance, animals, friends, crossword, watching a film, concentrating on work .... whatever gets you through and calms you down

  • Thank you for replying I'm beginning to realise that this prob has nothing to do with the jab but best wait for the results and see

  • You don't know, though .... hope you get results soon, then you can move on in whichever direction you are advised. All the best

  • Yes you are right just feeling a little sorry for myself I will wait for the results and hope for the best thank you

  • Hiya

Yes do try not to worry too much - easier said than done though. I'm the worlds worst worrier about anything health related!! I had my original jab (AZ) in February and still have a rubbery sort of moveable raised lymph node on my collarbone on the same side as the injection. Each time I have another jab (Pfizer booster this time) it enlarges again and I can feel other smaller ones next to it. Hard to say what size they are - it depends how anxious I am feeling about it!! I had normal blood tests as most people here seem to have done so most of the time I just forget about it now, especially as it seems to be such a common side effect and shows our immune systems are doing what they should do!!
Do let us know how you get on - hopefully all the other posts here are reassuring you - I know they helped me so much

  • Thank you so much for replying I had my ctscan yesterday now it's just a waiting game did you have a ctscan and did itt come back normal

  • Hiya

No - I just had blood tests. When I had my second jab I mentioned my raised node to the nurse who said it was a normal reaction that she sees a lot and not to worry. It's reassuring that everyone here who has had CT scans seems to have had a normal result - so hopefully yours will be the same. I know how hard waiting for results can be though!! Do keep us posted.
