Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • Some days I don't think  about them but when I have pain in my neck area I always seem to find it and then it brings up the anxiety again

he didn't seem concerned and said it probably didn't like the last booster on Nov last year either so reactivates it so I think it's a case of now living with it

you can't see it but I can feel it!

  • Hi,

Mine is still enlarged after a year too (in my armpit) I've had my armpit scanned quite a few times and been told ok. Also got told they fill up like balloons and might never go down.

I've had a previous cancer of lymph nodes so it really does play havoc with my anxiety and I'm always worrying if it's got larger or if the ultrasound showed the right place / scanned the correct node as when they scan your axilla they make you put your arm above head and the place where the node is seems to move. It's really hard to forget about it!

  • I do think they will stay up now like you say they fill up and never go right back down

I was told that it does mean your body has a good reaction to the vaccine and touch wood I haven't had it yet!!

  • Hello again

Do hope all is ok with you.

My lymph node is still swollen after all this time!
I'm beginning to think it might never return to normal - it's the new normal!!
I just wondered if you have had a mammogram recently and whether the swollen node might cause a recall?

I've got my first mammogram for 3 years tomorrow - 8 years after breast cancer I'm now back in the 3 year screening programme. I'm terrified as usual - more so this time as  I've convinced myself that something must have happened over 3 years and fully expect the dreaded recall letter!! Blood tests have all been fine though and I've been keeping  well but the fear never leaves you-
it doesn't get any easier does it!!

Hope others who posted here are doing ok.

    Jxx

  • Hi J

I think I'm fine, thanks. I am in the same position as you - now on the 3-year mammogram list after diagnosis in 2015. I don't think I am due in for some time. I hope very much that all will be fine with your mammogram.

I have noticed a tiny bit of lumpiness under the (hopefully) healthy armpit, but only if I stretch the skin tight - otherwise the armpit is soft, so maybe I am worrying unnecessarily. I had blood tests previously due to other worries, and they were fine.

My collarbone lymph node is still swollen too!

All the best, and let me know your result. I am guessing all will be fine.

    R xx

  • Thanks so much for replying - it's so good to speak to someone who knows exactly how you are feeling!!

Strangely enough I have a slightly lumpy armpit too - I keep prodding it but think maybe it's just the way my armpit is :)

I'll you know how I get on tomorrow - if my jelly like legs get me there!! My partner has taken time off work this week so we can do nice things to distract me from watching the post!! Although friends have said their results took a couple of weeks to arrive.

Do let me know when your mammogram comes up too!! xx

  • Will do. You have prompted me to get my armpit checked out, and I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon. Thank you! I finally caught COVID a month ago when we went to a music festival, so perhaps it might be that....

The mammogram itself is just a matter of turning up, so best foot forward..... It's the waiting afterwards that's the difficult bit, as you know, so have plenty of nice distractions lined up while you wait. Don't forget to mention your reaction to the vaccine and swollen node, so they can take account and bear it in mind before recalling you unnecessarily!

    All the best xx

  • Hope your appointment tomorrow goes ok. I'll definitely mention the swollen nodes.
Finding a large glass of white wine is helping to distract me this evening! :)

  • Hello!

I was just wondering if anyone still has their swollen collarbone and lymph nodes after nearly 2 years after their first initial covid jab? I had the 1st one March 2021 and 2nd Sept 2021. I haven't had any boosters as was too scared too after this.

I had an US scan on it July 2021 where he said looks normal and may not go down but to go back to the doctors if it changes. Ive had full bloods taken about 3 times since then and nothing has ever showed except low iron and low vitamin D.

I was recently in hospital for other issues been diagnosed with Intracranial Hypertension where my brain doesn't drain fluid enough had a head CT and MRI and showed to be normal so i know thats fine. Ive also had chest xray as had horrendous cough since Oct and that was clear too. Also going through investigations with gynecology as i have pcos. Anyways what i am saying is ive been under so much stress and worry to the point ive cried for like a week as felt my body was failing me could my lymph node be responding to stress? I have a bad neck and shoulder on the same side as my swollen collarbone/lymph node so could this be related? Im wondering if i have a trappoed nerve causing the swelling as its very tight and sore. The lymph node itself doesn't seem to have got any bigger or hurts its just the area is more swollen last couple of days. Im so sick of worrying about my health its exhausting! I feel so stressed out and i know my body is reacting to this too.

Im going to book a docs appointment to get it checked again but ive been 3 times and they practically tell me im being stupid.

    Sorry for the long post.

  • Hi

My collarbone lymph node is still up, although it's maybe shrunk a little bit, and I noticed my armpit lymph nodes seemed a bit swollen a few months ago, so got worried again and went for an ultrasound. The result was that the lymph nodes in my armpit really are enlarged, but not in a way that worried the medical staff, as they are the right shape, etc. so I think it's just a very long-lasting reaction to the COVID jabs. Also, I think my body is sensitive post-chemo, as I come out in a rash now, every time I get a virus, and different bits of me take turns to hurt! I did have all my boosters and had one mild dose of COVID last August.

I'm guilty of easily getting anxious and stressed too, and it does make you feel worse. When stressed, I get gut symptoms including gas/bloating and really awful pains below my right ribs plus muscle aches. I've just had a mystery lump on my middle ultrasound scanned and it turned out to be just a harmless lymphoma, as the GP had suspected. So I might not be the best advisor on not being anxious; however, my advice is to try and find distractions that make you happy and enjoy the moment. Wildlife gardening and wildlife photography occupied me a lot last year, plus bits of work, plus our dog, but she is now very old. We have, however,  just adopted a new dog. The new dog is young, fit, and keeping me very active and alert to mischief, and so hopefully I'll be so fit and distracted that the health worries won't resurface so often. Pilates has been good, too, as well as the great outdoors. Have you tried yoga or Pilates? I also play tennis once a week informally with some nice local people and always feel better afterwards. If that's too active, have you tried colouring or sewing? Both have helped me calm down.
