Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • Hi
I have been following this chat.  I had a large lump come up on the left side of my neck below my ear towards the collar bone.  It suddenly appeared or perhaps I did not notice it as have been distracted by my partner's serious lymphoma.  GP worried, referred to haematology, they wanted blood tests and ultrasound.  This showed an abnormal lymph gland ? fluid filled.  GP worried, referred me to ENT and had CAT scan.  I cannot fault their concern, care and thoroughness.  Meanwhile lump went down and disappeared as far as I could tell.  To cut it all short - today radiologist said could see nothing on ultrasound and signed me off - just said report anything odd to GP in future.  The lump was the size of 2 walnuts end on - noticied 5 weeks after Pfizer booster on top of Astra Zeneca vaccines.  I had bad reaction after booster, pain & arthritis flare.  Left arm had vaccine.  Well at least at 78 I have had a clear CAT scan  which is good!  Think vaccines need monitoring more.  Is there a place to report?

  • Hi. Is yours still swollen. Mine has been for 10 months and I m starting to worry again

    thank  you

  • Hi,

I wanted to post as this forum has given me so much reassurance over the last few weeks and I wanted to try and help others who are worried the way I have been.

I had 2 Pfizer covid vaccines in May and August of last year.  I had the Moderna vaccine as a booster on 7th January.  6 days later I noticed 2 lumps, one above my collarbone on the left side (vaccine side) and one on the right side. The right sided one was quite visible. I contacted my GP who checked for swollen lymph nodes under my arms, in my groin and tummy and said that if the neck lumps had not completely gone within a week, I would need an urgent referral to an ENT consutant. One week later and the lumps were still there.  Of course, I consulted Dr Google in the meantime which resulted in extreme anxiety, no sleep, not able to eat etc.

I have no other symptoms and the lumps aren't tender to touch.  I had an urgent bloood test, which came back fine and I had a private appointment with an ENT consultant within a week.  The ENT consultant felt the lumps and said they are definitely lymph nodes and that he wasn't overly concerned by them.  He said that as my neck is quite skinny, my lymph nodes would be easier to feel. An ultrasound was booked to make sure everything was OK and the consultant said it was mostly for my peace of mind.

At the ultrasound, the radiologist confirmed that both lymph nodes are normal but reactive and quite large at around 1.3cm.  He did acknowledge that it could be as a result of the Covid booster and that the nodes may never go completely back to normal.  This was reinforced by the consultant at my follow up appointment yesterday.  The consultant said that he thinks it is highly unlikely to happen but if the nodes start to get larger over a short period of time, then make another appointment but if not, leave them alone and don't worry about it!

I have reported this on the Yellow Card system and I really do think that awareness needs to be raised as this doesn't seem like such an uncommon side effect after coming across all these comments and studies etc I have seen from researching on the internet.

  • Thank you so much for the reply.

I am going to try and leave it alone because I keep messing with it and I m sure it's making it feel larger and tender!

    take care, stay well

  • Hi

just wanted to catch up to see if your lymph node ever disappeared as mine is still there

some days but tender but mostly just there

    hope you are ok

  • Hi

Mine is still there. Doesn't hurt, but that's a year and two months now!

    Take care,

    R

  • Hi

Me too!! Still there and no real change in size. Good to know I'm not the only one!

  • ...and me, but the one in my left armpit has gone now

  • My anxiety got the better of me and I called the GP to ask if a year after the vaccine and the node still there is ok and he reassured me that yes this does happen and checked the scan report from last year and confirmed that this is a reactice node that is taking its time to go and may never go or they do just randomly disappear and no more scans required.

  • Thanks for doing that on behalf of all whose swollen nodes are still there. I was also told once that they may never go, but it doesn't matter ...
