Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • Great post Mar437,

Quick question - when you touch it does it feel 6mm or were you suprised when they told you that measurement?

    Thanks

  • Hi jerryC,

It did feel slightly bigger than this, particularly if I rolled it onto the collarbone. It is quite mobile and sits slightly lower on the inside of my collarbone. When I roll it onto the bone, I think the skin stretches around it making it feel much bigger, around 1cm, but feels smaller when it its natural position.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi

I originally posted under a thread called supraclavicular lump. On 17.06 I happened to notice a lump just above my left clavicle / collarbone. I called my GP Friday morning and was told needed to wait until Monday to call for appointment. I had day off work and was feeling a bit concerned so managed to get a walk in GP appointment who noted supraclavicular lump / swollen gland/node on the left hand side (1cm) and said I needed to see my GP to be referred for ultrasound I'd also felt a small lump in right breast and had breast exam - nil abnormalities.

Friday night after getting home from that doctor I was starting to get intense pain in my back / neck / shoulder and arm on left hand side. Was in spasm by midnight so called 111 - after waiting until about 7pm the next day Medoc called me back.

a very dramatic call in which the doctor was saying how concerned he was and if he could scan me right there and then he would and mentioned Virchows Node Cancer as his main concern. I'm weirdly not panicked and had mentioned to doctor and 111 about having been vaccinated not long ago.

anyway still waiting to get to my GP on Monday on the advice of medoc (who has also sent them an urgent email as he says because it's left hand side it's a red flag). But have since found this thread which is making me feel much better already. I had Pfizer on 06.06.21 and who knows how long the gland has been swollen as in a really awkward place - it's really a stroke of luck I even noticed it when I did (I check myself regular) only reason I did check is I kept getting shooting pains in my chest and boobs.

Will see what comes of Monday in meantime I've reported to Yellow card scheme.

wish me luck! Hope you're all ok too x

  • Also only other thing that concerns me is the pain I'm in. I've not left my bed today because of spasms and can barely move. Haven't come across anyone else experiencing this?!

  • Hi,

Had my covid jab last Monday. 7 days later noticed this lump. my neck is slightly swallen on both sides of collar bone, however on the left side (where I had the jab) is a little hard lump that fits everyone's description. Went to GP, he sends me for an ultra scan soon. Seema like so many people having this... Anyone had any news on what it actually was????!

  • Very reassuring to hear all these comments, the very same for me. I had my jab about two weeks ago now and one morning a few days ago noticed a penny sized lump appear just above my left collar bone (Had my jab on the left not sure if that matters).

I'm only 29 but a regular smoker so naturally assumed the worst and googling symptoms to find out I only had minutes to live wasn't very clever.

I'm going to leave it for a week or so and if its still there will consult my GP but from the sounds of these posts it could be a common side effect from the jab, sensitive lymph nodes. Which from my very limited uinderstanding of the human body and vaccines in general, it would make sense as surely there's an influx of white blood cells running around you when you've had a vaccine and these are carried through your lymph nodes, might explain the hyper sensitvity causing lots of swelling in people.

  • Hi everyone,

I had posted in another thread first, but this one seems to be the main one on this topic here...

I just wanted to give a quick update. After finding the lump above my collarbone about 10 days after my first vaccination six weeks ago, I have now had two appointments with my GP regarding the problem. The first one was three weeks ago (about a week after finding the lump) and the second one three weeks later.

I have now had the swollen node for 6 weeks and, although I am almost certain that it has reduced in size a little, I cannot stop feeling anxious about it. The reduction in size is only minimal and has not progressed for the last four weeks. What I find most difficult is to say whether it might be changing in shape (less round, less soft) and whether it's still movable, as I first thought. This might have to do with the fact that I can now not feel it at all without shifting my shoulder back and pushing it out, which makes the whole area quite tight and exalted.

My GP has now booked me in for an ultrasound - but not via the 2-week neck-lump route, so I will be waiting for another 2-3 months. She said she'd expect the lump to have disappeared by then (in which case I could cancel the appointment), but if not, I should have the US.

I am now starting to wonder if I should ask her to make this more urgent because I have also been having problems with constant acid reflux for the past couple of years - so, I can't stop worrying that there might be something in my esophagus or stomach. (She thinks it's unrelated as I don't have any of the most common warning signs of cancer such as night sweats or weight loss.)

I am aware that I have to decide this for myself but I was wondering what other people would do in this situation. How long have you had your lumps now?

From what I've read in this and other threads, it seems to me that those swellings don't always go away within the suggested period of 4-6 weeks. Apparently, some people have even been told during their US examinations that these reactive lumps might not go away at all once they've been chronically swollen.

Quite a difficult time for me...

  • Might not be what you want to hear but I really think you should do whatever makes you feel better.

Had mine for 8 weeks now. It's reduced in size a bit. I spoke to my doc, she was unconcerned. She said she would only worry if it got bigger or I have any other symptoms (night sweats, weight loss etc)

I'm not really bothered about it anymore.

I am interested to see if it gets bigger after dose 2, but I'm thinking I might have it forever now. No big deal.

  • Hi Jerry,

You might be surprised to hear that it's actually really great to hear such a relaxed view. It shows me that there are other ways of dealing with this emotionally than what I am doing at the moment. I'm not saying that anxiety is wrong or should be suppressed but it does help to see that other people might not worry as much as I do at the moment.
    :)

  • Ahh no worries, glad I could help.

I might hit up a drop in vaccine centre for dose two if I don't get my second invite this week so I will let you all know if it gets bigger again.
