Specialist referral

So about 3 months ago I got a lump on my tongue - thinking it was just an ulcer I ignored it.
fast forward 2 months later it is still there and growing. I spoke to my GP who immediately mentioned cancer but asked me to go and see my dentist who would know more.

I saw my dentist last week who gave me some antibiotics - I assume to rule out a cyst and said if they didn't work they would refer me to a cancer specialist.
well the antibiotics did not work. The lump is still there and hasn't not got any smaller.

I now have some more worrying symptoms, I have bleeding gums and an extremely dry mouth!
I am terrified about Ben going referred to a cancer specialist and I was looking for advice on what to expect.

how long will I be waiting for my appointment?
what will happen there?

  • Hello Rebeckii20,

I'm sorry that your symptoms are worrying you, but you've done the right thing in getting it checked out. As you know, health services are in high demand due to the pandemic so waiting times for appointments aren't certain. Try not to worry, as nine out of ten people referred in this way are found not to have cancer. You can read more about referrals here.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello, kinda on the same boat as you? Got a referral to see an oral surgeon on the 14/12/2021 after an ulcer discovered 4-5 weeks ago. Am on holiday at the moment but struggling/worrying about the worst case scenario. Hope you are faring better. Happy to text/chat for mutual moral support.

  • Hi,

thankfully my lump turned out to be a benign cyst, the specialist was great, as soon as I walked in he took one look at the lump and said straightaway he was 99.9% certain it was nothing to worry about.
I had an appointment about 2 weeks later to have the lump removed, the stitches were uncomfortable but they fell out themselves with 24 hours and it healed brilliantly.
The lump was sent to be checked and I had a phone call from the specialist 4 weeks later to let me know it was definitely benign.
I hope everything goes well for you. Try not to worry until you know for certain it's something to worry about
