Concerns about bladder cancer.

Hi everyone,

I hope this is ok to post. I'm hoping to find some advice.

Around 8/9 weeks ago I began having an urgency to go to the toilet, I couldn't hold it at all, and I had to urinate very frequently. (I'm 28 years old).

I didn't have any pain going to the toilet but would often feel like I hadn't urinated it all out. Around 2 weeks after this I had pain in my upper back, it felt like it shook my whole ribcage.

I booked a doctors appointment, and did a urine sample and was told I had an extremely large amount of microscopic blood in my urine but no infection. I explained about the back pain and was told by the doctors where I was describing the pain was not near my kidneys at all, however she would put it down to a kidney stone and I was sent for a CT Scan (without dye).

I went for the scan and was told I had the all clear but symptoms once again kept reoccurring, except I no longer had any upper back pain. I have since had antibiotics in the hope it could of been an infection not picked up, however once again upon repeating my urine sample, still lots of blood and no infection. However my frequency has eased but I still have the urgency to go to the toilet, and an agonising pain in my right hip/lower back.

Has anyone on here who has been diagnosed with bladder cancer only ever had microscopic blood in there urine?

My doctors has told me not to show any concern, however I'm a little worries why there is still so much microscopic blood in my urine?

Thanks for reading.  Lucie

Update ****

I went for a Cytoscopy on Monday, where a growth/mass was detected in my bladder which has been photographed. I was told to go away and someone would be in touch, so I'm waiting to hear from a doctor as to what this might be.

  • I go for my cystascopy tomorrow got high protein  and microscopic blood in urine but head all over the place

  • I know how you are feeling. Having people tell you not to worry doesn't help, I know. You will worry, it is natural. The chances are though, it will be fine. I had microscopic blood and still do. All the tests I had couldn't find the cause. The procedure is really quick and not painful. A little uncomfortable afterwards for a while. Sitting down was difficult to begin with. You can watch the screen as well if you wish. Although I cannot make it better for you, I am here if you just need to chat to someone who has been there.

  • I am new and have been searching forums as I have to have Cystoscopy on Sunday for a 5mm polyp on my bladder! I have no symtoms this was an accidental find but I'm a nervous wreck :(

  • Hi Maw86, I'm new too and just offering nothing more than a bit of empathy really! I have a cystoscopy booked in just over a week and am also a nervous wreck. If you don't mind my asking, what type of cystoscopy are you having and is it the procedure itself that is worrying you or the results or both?

I have been told I need to have a GA and they will do a biopsy. I keep getting mixed messages from the GP and consultant so that has heightened my anxiety and I haven't had a satisfactory explanation as to why the operation needs to be under a GA or why there will be a biopsy. Despite all the questions I have asked!

I am 57 and have had bladder pain almost every day for 18 months. A couple of times the symptoms have felt like a UTI and responded to antibiotics but the underlying pain (a dull ache/throb that sometimes becomes quite severe) never goes. I have had several ultrasounds (all clear), X-rays (clear), blood tests (normal) ... and urine tests. Latter have been normal except the nurse today mentioned traces of blood ( I had all the symptoms of a UTI last weekend and have just finished antibiotics). Blood has never been visible to they eye. Because the pain is constant, the reminder is constant - and so my worry and fear increases with pain it. My GP offers sympathy but little action. She is pretty determined it's IC and prescribed amitriptyline (ineffective, but makes me sleepy!). My mother and brother died of kidney cancer in June - two weeks apart. Most of my family has either had cancer and being treated or has died of it. After seeing a locum I finally found a GP who was more concerned about checking for cancer given my family history and referred me to a consultant. I saw him about 3 weeks ago. He said my family history made him 'paranoid' and 'if I am paranoid, you should be too'. Bedside manners not always helpful! I asked him if he thought it was cancer and he said he felt optimistic given I have never smoked or been in a smoke environment and have no visible blood. He has arranged the cystoscopy and said he wanted to remove some cells hence a GA required. I asked if it could be done under a local and he said no but refused to be drawn on why.

I'm climbing the walls. Dreading the procedure and dreading the result. After today's discovery of traces of blood and pretty sure it's cancer and very concerned my GP has imposed an 18 month delay on this for me.

  • Hi sorry that you have found yourself here also! Im The flexible one ..I assume they'll take sample or just look not sure . I had an incidental find during ovary ultrasound of 5mm polyp..I don't have any symptoms! Been told could be something could be nothing which does really give you much to go on! I know the climbing walls and dread feeling! It's been a bloody long 4 weeks wait for this! Along with far too much googling! If you haven't googled already then please stay that way! Stick with the forums
