Waiting for tests

Hi I visited my GP on Monday who examined me and noted a lesion on my cervix. She told me in the appointment and I asked her about 4 times if she was concerned and she said no but just wanted to get it checked out.

She then did a referral for me through the cancer pathway and said she wanted it done quickly as I have other issues and she wants this checked before dealing with them.

I then phoned her for reassurance the following day and asked if she had concerns it may be cancer and she said she thinks it is something else but just wants me to be seen quickly and due to covid other waiting lists are taking a long time.

I recieved my appointment letter yesterday which said I have been referred as urgent as I have symptoms which may mean I have cancer. The clinic when I rang them said it is a standard letter that goes out with all referrals but that hasn't eased my mind.

I have been so worried since my appointment with the GP on Monday, I have an 18 month old and just keep fearing the worst. Should a GP tell you if they have significant concerns that you may have cancer? I am worried she said what she did as she knew I was worrying. Now every twinge or ache I get I just keep scaring myself.

My appointment is Thursday which seems a lifetime away and I just wondered if people from experience have found GP's to be very upfront.

I can't stop thinking about it

  • Hi Iw84,

I'm sorry to read about your worries but I can certainly understand this must be unsettling. It sounds as if your GP is being very thorough and it's good to hear you don't have long to wait for your appointment - although I can appreciate that any amount of time to wait is difficult.

Your GP may simply be looking to rule something out, and as the clinic said, the letters are standard.

Try not to assume anything at this point, and instead before your appointment try to keep yourself busy as much as possible to keep your mind off things.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
