Uterus Thickness

Hi I'm looking for someone who may of been through this, or similar.  I'm 45, and have children. I haven't been through the menopause, and bleed very heavily roughly 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off.  At my smear which was clear the nurse suggested I speak to my GP when I told her about my bleeding. The GP sent me for a scan and this has shown the lining of my uterus is measuring 23mm in a certain area. There were no obvious polyps or fibroids. My GP has now sent a 2 week cancer referral to the hospital. I guess I'm asking could this be normal for me or am I right to be worried?

  • Hi Lesley, I was in the same position as you two months ago although my lining measured 33mm. I was referred for a hystercopy under the two week referral. This confirmed the lining was indeed grossly thickened and not smooth, they took a biopsy and fitted a Mirena coil which I wasn't sure about, I have never taken hormone tablets and I'm not keen on any form of medication, but they said that this would protect my lining from cancer and work to thin the lining. The following week I had the results of the biopsy which was simple cystic endometrial hyperplasia, with no abnormal cells.  Coil seems to be working as bleeding substantially reduced, but need to give it six months to see what it can do. Will go back for another check up and biopsy in six months, will then be monitored but hope that the coil will do its work.  I think my body was just not producing enough progesterone and I am happy that the coil is providing this directly to the right area without having to take pills.  It is a worrying time but I hope that you get this sorted.

  • Hi, thank you for responding. You have really helped to calm me down. It does sound similar. My GP originally mentioned the Mirena coil if everything is clear. I've never had a coil and I am the same as you with medication. I'm really pleased things have worked out well for you. Hopefully I won't be waiting too long for my appointment. Thanks
