Smear test abnormal

Hi.. I never thought I'd be posting here but I'm having quite a cancer scare (this may be my fault due to googling) but just looking for some advice. I'm 24 years old and I had a smear test and a pelvic ultrasound last week due to abnormal bleeding and lower stomach cramps for the last year. The doctor said I have an endometrial polyp as she showed me on the ultrasound screen. I also then had a smear test the same day and My result has come back as HIgh risk HPV and borderline nuclear cell changes.. They have booked me in for a colposcopy to remove the polyp / take a lab analysis sample but I am very worried about the HPV and not sure how this has been caused, will it affect my life? Does HPV mean that I am at a high chance of cancer and will I be able to have children? I'm just going a bit mad here. I have a family history of colon cancer as my father was diagnosed in 2017. I may have to wait until January for my colposcopy as I am supposed to be going on holiday next week with family.. my brother is getting married and I can't back out of this or tell them what's going on so I need to be patient and wait it out. Should I be worried?

  • Hello Crystal1996

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some health problems which have led to you finding out you have a polyp and HPV. It's understandable that you're feeling worried about what this may all mean for you and it sounds as if Google has probably made you feel even more anxious.

HPV is a common virus that 8 in 10 people will get at some point in their lives. There's some really good information on the Jo's Trust website about HPV which hopefully may answer some of your questions. They also have a helpline and I'm sure that if you gave them a call they'd be happy to talk things through with you, answer some of your questions and offer you some reassurance about your situation. Do think about giving them a call.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
