Indeterminate lung nodule query

Hi all, 3 months ago I had tongue cancer surgery, and prior to surgery I had a CT and MRI Scan.

A few days ago I received a letter inviting me to go for a CT thorax, I wasnt expecting the appointment and rang the hospital.

The hospital said that the initial scan found a indeterminate lung nodule, (which I wasnt made aware of) they said this was a follow up scan on that finding.

It wasnt mentioned at the time because it wasnt deemed a priority.

Now I am super scared of what this could be and wondered whether anyone else had a similiar experience?

Many thanks

  • Lung nodules are found on a lot of X-Rays and CTs, not all are something to worry about, most are just there from infections or inflammation. Try not to worry yourself too much, I know its hard not to, I too have a couple of nodules found whilst doing a CT scan on my cancer, I was really worried too, and I had to wait an extra 3 months so it took 6 months for my second scan, thats not a wait I want to repeat, luckily mine had not grown, so hopefully that means I'm in the clear, I dont know if they will still monitor them, nothing has being said.

  • Thanks Leilani23, just feels like another set back, brings you right back to that initial feeling of when you're told about the intial diagnosis. I have asked them about it and on my first MDT meeting the radiologist didnt think there was anything to follow up, however my surgery didnt go as expected and a second MDT was needed and it was a different radiologist. That second radiologist felt that a another scan was needed for somthing they were unsure about.

  • Sounds like they are just double checking everything, or maybe your second radiologist is more experienced and thinks its best they re-check, but that does not help you with the worry, I'm sorry your surgery did not go as planned, did something go wrong? or was it just not what you expected. I've still to have mine, and I'm not looking forward to it, as I do not think they will allow anyone with me, it was bad enough getting a cancer diagnosis on my own due to it being at the beginning of lockdown, since then my surgery being delayed due to covid, I'm hoping I'll have more of an idea of how long I'll have to wait as I have a phone consultation coming up at end of month, I'll be glad to get it finally over. All we can do is take one day at a time, and be kind to ourselves.

  • Hi, I hope they get you a date soon, after your consultation.

I wasn't allowed anyone with me, although I was on a covid free ward. I found Facetime and Whatsapp very useful.

The first time they started the surgery, they stopped and felt that a different approach was required. Longer surgery but better for overall function & outcome. 1 hour surgery turned into a 8 hour surgery.

  • Wow that was a long time, Im glad it worked out better for you, but it must of being frustrating at the time for them to stop and start again. Covid worries me, I was in hospital in march, just as lockdown started and they only allowed one visiter at that time and it had to be same person, so I was consistently on messenger with my family, I'm hoping they will give me some idea of when they will remove it, the waiting has being hard, you kinda worry what its doing, at the moment they are treating me with hormone therapy to stop the tumour growing, they said it had not grown much at my September CT which was a big relief at the time. Hopefully your lung nodule will be ok, with me I figured if they were growing I would start with some of the lung cancer signs, the main one being a cough, which I did not have. When do they rescan you have you got a CT date?
