Petrified about lymphoma

Hi all

I am (and have been for a while now) really worried about lymphoma.  I have had a swollen lymph node in my neck for a month now, and another popped up the other day.  Have seen doctor a few times and he has felt them and said they do not feel abnormal and he is really not worried.  He says they can take a couple of months to go down.  Had my bloods done and all normal other than a slightly high lymphocyte count (3.2) - he said he is not worried about this as could be a virus.  I am not ill otherwise (which is worrying me more!).  Got really upset the other day in the surgery so doctor said he will send me for ultrasound.  Very scared to get the results.   Has anybody been in a similar situation?  Thank you in advance

  • Hey

I'm. Sorry your feeling so scared.

Basically my story is I've had a swollen lymph node for about 3 years. About 2cm very obvious and easily felt. I got an ultrasound scan done about 2 years ago and they didn't even take a biopsy they said it doesn't look suspicious. It's still there and it got it rechecked a month or 2 ago. Part of me wishes they toom a biopsy to put my mind at ease as I still worry about lymphoma etc but apparently a lymph node can come up and never really go back down to the normal size.

    Take care x

  • A few years ago, I had lumps develop under my neck near my jawline both were both really quite swollen. My friend was concerned, so I visited a nurse who also looked concerned and told me to visit my GP who referred me for an ultrasound, which made me panic! Ended up being lymph nodes and they did eventually go down. The likelihood is that is nothing sinister and will end up being totally benign just like mine. I totally sympathize with you, because the anxiety surrounding my health is a nightmare.

  • Hi,

I'm in the exact same position as you right now. I've had a lump in my neck for at least over a month - as well as throat problems in general - and the doctor had a feel recently and referred me to have an ultrasound. He said he wasn't really worried about it and the only reason he's referred to me to have the US is because I have anxiety and I'd worry about it too much if I had no tests done. My doctor also said he thinks the reason could be a virus which sounded odd to me as I haven't felt genuinely uwell since around March. I guess it is possible to have a virus and be asymptomatic. He said swollen lumps in the neck are quite common and if you have a skinnier neck you're more likely to notice them. The ultrasound is next month, I'm absolutely terrified and thanks to my anxiety, I'm crying a lot and absolutely fearing the worst. I hope it all goes well for the both of us.

  • Thank you so much for replying and glad it wasn't anything serious for you.  I really hope that is the case with me but health anxiety takes my mind to awful places!!  Thank you again responses like yours do help a lot x

  • Thank you so much for replying.  Really glad you're ok! Want to get my ultrasound done but just terrified for results.  So nice to hear positive outcomes it does help but yes the health anxiety is uncontrollable

  • Hiya.  Sorry to hear you are in the same situation - it's really awful!!!  Same thing with me - doctor was reluctant to give me a scan but I broke down so don't think he could refuse!  My doctor also said the same re virus but I haven't been ill either so struggling to think that's the cause.  I am terrified too and keep getting myself in a state crying etc - it's the worst feeling I completely get it.  I wish you all the best and please let me know how you get on.  I will update you on mine too should it be soon.

  • Health anxiety or even general anxiety surrounding your health can be very crippling. I also found that the more I touched the lump the more irritated it got and the more it worried me. So, if you are poking and prodding at it, know that they can make it bigger/feel worse.

Wishing you all the best on your ultrasound scan, and hope to hear from you when you get your results!

  • Hi again. I just wanted to let you know that I had my scan today and it was all fine! The doctor told me the lump didn't look abnormal and if it was anything serious it would've swelled a lot bigger than it has. No more tests or anything needed to be done. I'm really glad he told me during the appointment as I don't think I could've coped with anymore waiting. I hope you got/get similar results with your scan.

  • Hi there.  Thanks for replying.  I had meant to come on and update this as I had my scan last Saturday.  Mine was also fine!  Doctor said the same thing - that they do not look sinister and if they were they would be a lot bigger.  So relieved and can finally breathe!  Really glad for you too.  Hopefully other people will see this and find some comfort.
