Nasal Cancer Symptoms

Hello All ,

I am a 31 year old female who has been having nasal issues for a while

it all started 3 years ago when I was pregnant with my son and I started having regular nosebleeds. My GP then said I had what looks like a nasal polyp and referred me to ENT.

when I look into my nose I see this purplish growth in my nose

I was told it was nothing to worry about at ENT Fast forward a year later I woke up 1 day to smelling cigarettes. That's all I could smell. Then I couldn't smell much not even my sons diapers. I was then given a steroid nasal spray & referred back to ENT.

the ENT consultant did an endoscopy and said he couldn't see anything. Since then I have been having bad headaches , loss of smell & blocked nose.

Over the past 2 months On top of headaches I have a constant runny nose , pain in the nose , pain at the tip of my nose & nosebleeds and now pain in ear.  I went to A&E due to a bad nose bleed recently  and I have now been referred to ENT again. Surprisingly the doctor at A&E  said ENT never diagnosed me with polyp which is now worrying me as to what the growth in my nose is? He also said my other nose was inflamed.

I am in constant pain and I googled all the symptoms and they all point to sinus cancer. How do I get the ENT to do more tests than the ones they've done previously? I am worried the symptoms are getting worse.

thank you all.

  • Hi,

I would continue to pester them and ask for scans and if they can do a biopsy, be really persistent until they take notice. I was back and forth to GP and A&E last year. Had a random nose bleed and from there couldn't smell anything and my one nostril was consistently blocked. I also had headaches that got progressively worse by August last year. By New Years Eve my GP sent me to the assessment unit at my local hospital, where a biopsy was taken. At this point they thought I had an autoimmune deficiency but the results came back inconclusive. I had another one under general anaesthetic and that came back as cancer in my sinus. From what I gather mine had started in the ethmoid sinus and grew into the nasal area and my nose especially by the bridge had grown out towards the eye.

I can see why you would be worried due to googling symptoms, but try and refrain from doing that as you will get in to too much of a panic.

  • Hi Tanya,

Thank you for your response and kind words. I don't want to worry my family so I haven't discussed my fears with my husband but I know he is worried especially when he notices I can't smell our sons diapers when he's messed himself. it's all starting to depress me. The waiting time is 18 weeks currently so trying to stay positive. I am Considering going private but noticed on private hospital website the same ENT doctor who saw me twice works there too.

I hope your treatment is going well.

  • Hi Lilimu,

Don't keep your worries to yourself, talk about it as it will only eat you up. My husband can be a bit of a worrier at times but he has been my rock throughout. We are both having joint counselling through our cancer centre which is helping him.

I am on the recovery path now I do have 2 scans next week to see if the ethmoid sinus is free from cancer as my last MRI showed an abnormality. But the consultant from the skull based team's gut feeling is it's changes from treatment. If you have any questions at all I am happy to help.
