Struggling to speak to my GP while waiting to be seen at hos

Any advice would be appreciated. I am 61 and now in week 4 of post menopausal bleeding, very heavy. I have backache and pelvic discomfort. This came on suddenly with no warning. GP has given me tablets to try and help and has made a referral for me to be seen at hospital. My discomfort is getting worse so I phoned my surgery to request some further telephone advice only to be told that because of Covid and staff shortages they are only dealing with medical emergencies. I don't know what I should do, if anything. My symptoms are suggestive of cancer. I know and feel something isn't right but I'm reluctant to 'bother the NHS' when they are already overwhelmed. That said, I feel I need to be seen ASAP. Any advice please?

  • Hi Diall,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. If you feel you would like some advice or medical guidance and your referral is a long way away, then you can either phone your GP again and explain your concerns and that you feel it is urgent, or alternatively you could call 111 to see what they suggest.

    Wishing you all the best,
