Suspected Vulvar Cancer (very large cyst)

So in December 2019 I had a miscarriage and ended up having a D&C. Around January I noticed a very small cyst in my labia (right side - not in the bartholins area, higher up than that). I then got pregnant again and the cyst proceeded to grow slowly over the course of the pregnancy. In this time I visited several GPs that all said it was just a "simple" cyst that would go away after pregnancy and they couldn't do anything about it.  I was put on antibiotics that ever so slightly reduced it but it still kept growing.

In June when I visited the consultant at the hospital about my pregnancy I showed them the cyst that had grown even larger at this point. They then referred me to get it cut out (thank God I thought). However when I got to this appointment the doctor felt it was risky with me being pregnant and the cyst wasn't that bad. Towards the end of the pregnancy it got bigger and bigger and when I had my csection in October they even laughed about taking it out then but didn't!! And they had a good look at it.

After birth it was horribly uncomfortable sitting/standing etc. The whole thing was now protruding out of my vagina and looked angry with veins in it. I *stupidly* had a salt bath to try and help it, and it started to drain. However the next time I dared to look at it, it had horrible red blister type things on it. Completely freaked out I visited the GP again and she took a swab of the discharge, but thought the red blisters on top of the massive cyst were just irritation from it breaking and leaking a bit. I was put on antibiotics that did nothing to help it. And was referred to the gynecology team at the hospital, only to have my appt cancelled due to "staff sickness".

In desperation I went to A+E yesterday and was referred to the gynecology team, for the doctor to go the complete other way and say how concerned she was and that I should prepare for the worst but hope for the best. She took a biopsy and did a smear test and asked lots of cancer questions (losing weight, do I have swelling in my stomach etc).

So now I'm a mess. Still in pain with the size of this damn thing (they didn't drain it or anything), waiting on results to see if I have vulva cancer (which the doctor seems convinced of), and trying to hold my *** together to be a mum to my 1 month old.

I'm 34 years old.

Any advice?

  • Hi Rach0987,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. Firstly I'm sorry to read everything you've been through recently - I'm sure this has caused a mix of emotions. It's good that you have persevered with finding out more about this and at least now you've had some investigations - and hopefully it won't be long to wait to find out the results of these.

All I can really suggest is trying to keep your mind off it as much as possible while waiting to hear more. I know this is easier said than done, but many people say keeping busy helps - and perhaps your 1 month old will help with this.

I hope you find out more soon - and we're always here for support if you need it at any point.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Thanks Ben.

I just wanted to follow up on this thread so others in my position could see what happened.

I went for a CT scan a few days after the biospy.

Today I got the results that the lump is benign!! But bizarrely it is breast tissue growing in that area (probably due to the pregnancy) which is very strange so I will probably be referred to a specialist anyway to look at next steps/getting it removed as it is causing me a lot of pain and could become cancerous if left.

But for now I can hold my baby tight and feel reassured.
