Blood clot/bleeding bowels

Hi everyone, I have a concern and I need help. I am a 20 year old female diagnosed with IBS and SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). For years now, I've been getting blood occasionally in my stools and often mixed with mucus. Neither of my confirmed conditions should be causing bleeding. Last night however, was the straw that broke the camel's back. I had a very sore anal fissure, with alot of blood. However there was also a small blood clot on the tissue too. I have had a sigmoidoscopy last month aswell as biopsies. My sigmoidoscopy looked good but I'm still waiting on my biopsy results (although its been weeks so i am presuming they're clear). I have an appointment with the gastroenterologist soon, and I don't know what to say to her. Is there anything I should ask or look for? I know I should trust her but I am scared. I don't know what to do and say.

  • Hi there,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read about your worries but I can understand how you're feeling and that this must be unsettling.

I'm not sure if you are due to receive your biopsy results at your appointment - if not, you could call to check when you might expect your results, as if it's been longer than around 3 weeks or so then you should have expected to receive them by now.

As for your appointment, I would suggest making a note of any changes, such as the things you have mentioned in your post here, and discussing these with the specialist - along with any questions you have noted. Do try to trust your doctor and the specialists, and once all the information and results is available you should know more, including any next steps if necessary.

Wishing you all the best and I hope it's not too long to wait to find out more,

    Ben
