Tonsil cancer

Hello my name is Heather, I am new on here I'm just looking for advice really.

I went to see my doctor because I have swollen glands in my neck had them for over 6 weeks also I've got one tonsil larger than the other, i noticed this 4 weeks ago but not really sure on how long its been like that. I've been referred to the ENT and im just wondering what to expect at this appointment.

Many thanks

  • Hi Heather, my name is Nicole I have a small lump on one of my tonsils and I was sent for an urgent referral to ENT. Basically they will take a medical history and then will probably use a scope which is gently put up the nostril on the side of the abnormality and it will go down the back of the throat to closely examine the throat. After this you maybe asked to go for a CT or MRI of your neck and possibly biopsy. I've found all of this extremely stressful as I have PTSD and have been having repeated panic attack. Somehow I got through the scope where nothing was found and the MRI was very claustrophobic but mine came back clear. The trouble I've found is lack of explanation from the medics, you have so many questions but are often so nervous you don't ask and they say very little. I think it's really important to have everything explained to you so your brain can process what's happening. Without knowledge it leaves room for doubt and fear. I have to go back next week to discuss the lump on my tonsil whatever that means I think the last thing to do is biopsy and my stress levels are so bad I feel sick everyday. I wish you all the luck in the world and hope you get the all clear.

  • Hi Heather,

sounds pretty similar to my experience, I went to the doctors 4 weeks ago with ear pain, tinnitus and one large tonsil. I was given an urgent ent appointment and seen two days later.
At the ent appointment I had the endoscopy and all looked fine in my nose and throat but they wasn't happy with my one tonsil.
I had a tonsillectomy 15 days ago, I'm currently waiting for my biopsy results, I spoken to my consultants secretary on Friday afternoon and was told the consultant will call with my results and an appointment tomorrow.
The waiting is definitely the hardest part, saying that I did struggle for 10 days after the tonsillectomy. It was painful but worth it.
hope all goes well and hope this helps to know what sort of process you might face.

  • Thankyou,

I was just a bit worried what to expect and you have helped.

I have got my appointment on Tuesday, but fingers crossed it's just nothing but you can not help but to worry, my doctor's face was not very reassuring when he looked in my mouth.

    Thanks again

  • Thank you Nicole

I am glad you replied to my post you have helped me understand what would likely happen at my appointment on Tuesday, I am a bit worried as to what it might be, but fingers crossed it is nothing.

    Thanks again:happy:

  • You are very welcome my love. I've just shed a tear as I'm dreading to go back to ENT next week. I think I may have to have a biopsy but I don't know what that will entail. I can block things out and then all of a sudden I get a wave of panic which overwhelms me. I wish you lots of luck.

    Nicole

  • I wish you all the best too Nicole

And I hope everything goes well it is not a very nice feeling, it's faceing the unexpected more than anything else.

Let me know how you get on, my fingers are crossed for you.

    Best wishes Heather

  • Thanks you have calmed me right down just by sending a kind message. You are so right it is the unexpected. Please let me know how you get on and at least we can both say we have both offered help and support to one another. I think it makes a huge difference when someone truly understands what you are going through.

    Take care.

  • Good luck today, hope all goes well and you get the answers your looking for.

  • I was wondering if you received positive news Aidan? I'm due to have my tonsillectomy tomorrow for the same issue as you and I've been worried sick for 2 months about the biopsy results. Really hope it was negative for you

  • Hi,

yes I got my results 19 days after my tonsillectomy, it  was negative, in regards to the tonsillectomy stock up on pain relief, I really struggled with the pain, not saying that to scare you but just so you know what's coming, I was taking dissolvable paracetamol and switching between oramorphe and codeine. Just try and sleep as much as you can. It's so important that you eat too, I was too much of a baby and didn't eat anything for a week and ended back up in hospital.

Regarding the waiting for results this was the worst time of my life, people say just keep busy and don't think about it but I found it impossible to think about anything else, I was convinced of the worst and looking back now I caused myself so much stress, I was constantly googling things. I was such hardwork to be around, it was just the not knowing.

I really hope all goes well for you and you get the results back fast with the positive news we all hope for.
