Severely Dysplastic Nevus

Had one removed taking extra margins yesterday. I have a lot of moles and would like them checked. I have been told thst the NHS does not do this and thst I will have to pay privately. I have booked in for mole mapping at a Nuffield hospital. Has anyone else had the same experience.

  • I've had several severely dysplastic nevi removed. NHS did photograph some of my moles/other lesions with a special dermatoscopy camera some years back which flagged a couple to keep a closer eye on. The old photographs were useful for comparison when I had new referrals and further excisions this year. More recently I've (again) had total body photography at an NHS hospital to help me keep check and for the doctors to refer back to. Monitoring hundreds of moles/other lesions is extremely challenging especially those on the back.

You probably do get a better service going privately... I think our NHS hospital offers more to private than NHS patients. On their website they say going private helps pay for NHS dermatology! But I'd prefer not to say what area I'm in and personally I can't afford that option as mole mapping is very expensive. Still I'd be really interested to hear what exactly your mole mapping service involves. Perhaps you could post an update on here.

  • Agree it is very expensive but don't feel I have any option. I had hoped that someone would share their NHS experience/area etc. I can't afford this either but if it's the difference between doing it or leaving them then I have no choice.

  • I've been seen at a couple of different hospitals over the years in more than one country. I didn't get any photography done after my first severely dysplastic nevus. I think it is generally the case that unless you have had multiple dysplastic nevi or have a family history of melanoma (as I do now) then unfortunately that's par for the course. If you have any significant additional risk factors - severe sunburns, family history of melanoma – then it might be worth pushing for a second opinion about NHS treatment. Unfortunately anything preventative seems to have gone on the back burner a bit with COVID (higher threshold than before) and some areas of the country are more stretched than others.

I've had more than four dysplastic nevi removed over several decades. Years ago my sibling had a lot of dysplastic nevi removed privately. While I wanted to do the same I had to recognise that I didn't have the means. To be fair the NHS have done all the necessary excisions over the years and I've saved a small fortune. But not getting the same checks my sibling did has meant more stress over time. I guess you are paying to remove that stress. Good luck.
