New nipple inversion/retraction (currently breastfeeding)

Hi I am currently breastfeeding my 3rd child. I've had some issues on the right side which I think has been ductal thrush which has now cleared up and sore cracks which has also cleared up in terms of no longer being sore but I still have a nipple which seems to be turning in on itself slightly a lot of the time. It is kind of like a crease sometimes horizontal or with a bit of a curve. It completely comes back out after feeding or if I give it a bit of a squeeze but when I take my bra off it is usually retracting back in a bit. I've been to the gp and been referred to a one stop breast clinic. The waiting is just awful. It's on Wednesday so not too much longer now. The gp couldn't find any lumps at all and neither can I. She said it was just for peace of mind. Every time I google inverted nipple it mentions sign of cancer but I have also found things saying it can be due to breastfeeding damaging and shortening the milk ducts. Anyone had any experience of this?

Thanks

  • Hi

I am currently experiencing the same problem.

During my pregnacy with my third child I noticed one day in the bath my left nipple had inverted (mine completely goes in though) it only stayed inverted for a couple of minutes before returning back to normal so I didnt think too much of it and never really checked again if I'm honest as bad as that sounds.

It wasnt until I gave birth and started breast feeding that I became more aware of it turning in but coming back out shortly after. I mentioned it to my midwife who advised I see my gp.  Which I did. I took a photo of my nipple when its inverted to show my doctor incase it wasnt inverted on the day, but whilst being examined the nipple went in so my doctor was able to see what happens. Anyway I was examined and told she couldnt feel any lumps and wasnt concerned but to return in a months time for a check up, or call back in the mean time if I was concerned.

Two days passed and my thoughts were running away with me so I called to make another appointment however was only spoken to over the phone by a nurse practitioner who simply said since the nipple wasnt staying inverted and was coming out on it's own she wasnt concerned she said I know what your thinking and cancer doesnt come and go were her words!

I ended up calling the doctors a third time three weeks after my first visit and spoke with a lovely doctor who agreed she would refer me to the breast clinic for peace of mind.

I have my appointment at the breast clinic on tuesday and the closer it's getting the more worried and anxious I am becoming.

Unfortunately i dont have any advice just wanted to say I am in the same boat and wishing you best of luck at your appointment.

  • Hi thank you so much for replying! That has actually put my mind at rest that they weren't even going to refer you! My GP actually said "I don't think you'll read until you get this checked will you?" So you be fair she didn't seem terribly worried either.

So you are the day before me! I'll be checking this eagerly awaiting to see what happened so please do post! Every time I've found something like this on the net the person hasn't posted to say what was found!

I am actually feeling a bit calmer about it today. I hope you are doing okay today too.

  • I keep having moments where I've been like I'm fine everythings fine 3 different doctors have all said the same and none of them have seemed concerned.

But then other times i get the what if thought in my head.

Thankfully tuesday isnt that far away now.

I will definitely update you with how I get on.

  • I'm exactly the same, I've been in a state and teary at times!

    Thank you!

I don't know if this helps but I found a paper with a study where they'd looked at 60+ newly inverted nipples with no lump and only 3 had cancer. And non in those under 50. I found that reassuring so thought I'd share.

  • Oh bless you I've been there too, and the more I look at my children the more I want to just ball my eyes out!

I'm terrible I'm constantly googling. I really dont know why I do it to myself!

That is reassuring to hear thank you!

  • I know, I'm the same!

ive donee soo much googling but actually found it helpful to dig out bits saying it could be nothing.

im wondering if my nipple actually looks a bit better today. Or having more times when it looks normal.
