Finding a lump in your 20s

Hi,

I'm not sure what to say or even if I should post here as I feel like a bit of a fraud.

I found a lump, in my left breast. But it's the pain that prompted me to get an appointment with my GP today.

He was really understanding, compassionate and helpful. He has put me on to a referral and to be seen in the next two weeks.

I'm 28, it's my 29th birthday at the end of this month. I'm really anxious and not sure how to focus on anything else. Last 48 hours have been full of worry.

Has anyone gone through anything similar? How did you cope?

  • Hello GoodGollyMissMolly

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently found a breast lump. It's good that you say your GP quickly and that they've referred you to the breast clinic.
It's not uncommon for women to have lumpy breasts and indeed the large majority of women who attend breast clinic are no diagnosed with cancer so try to stay positive.
I know that lots of our members here will agree that this period of waiting for appointments and tests/results can be really difficult and it's natural to feel anxious about what may be going on. Try to keep busy and take things a day at a time. Looking too far ahead will lead to you feeling more anxious about things.

If you'd like to talk to one of our nurses then you're welcome to call them. I'm sure that they will be able to offer some advice and support ahead of your appointment. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello!

You aren't a fraud at all and everyone copes differently.

I’ve recently made a post about my recent biopsy. I’m also 28 going on 29, I found a lump and thickening the day after my wedding in September! I waited until after my honeymoon to see the doctor and then was seen within a few days but had to wait 8 weeks for a biopsy!

I think the only thing about the waiting game for me that helps is that my mum and sister have both had breast cancer and are both doing very well so I know that whatever happens we can do anything!

Try to keep busy and not over think it x

  • Hi

I was the exact same when i was trying to decide whether or not to call the doctors when I found a lump (I am 26). My doctor was fantastic and reassured me that no matter your age when you notice a change in your breasts you need to get checked out, as you know them best.

I have my appointment in a week and a half at the breast clinic. It's totally normal to feel everything you are feeling. At first I convinced myself it was cancer and scrolled through everything you can find on Google. I felt a bit better once I got my appointment as at least I knew when it was. Try and keep yourself occupied as much as you can, and all the best for your appointment.
