Skin Cancer scare & Referral

Hello,

I'm 20 and I've just been referred to the hospital to see a dermatologist under the two week rule, for a mole on my back. I've had the mole all of my life but since it's on my back I cannot be sure if it's changed. It hasn't bled or itched and is smaller than the end of a pencil/pencil rubber. It looks all one colour but my doctor mentioned how it got lighter towards the edge, almost as if it's blurring out.

I noticed that the border of the mole, or the edge, is rather irregular and it threw me into a huge panic. I also have hypochondria (severe health anxiety) so this is an extremely terrifying time for me. I am so afraid of cancer and I've been living with the mindset that I've got skin cancer for the past couple of weeks. I really struggle with the waits between these kinds of appointments.

Please could anyone help me? I've never had anything as scary as this happen before and I'm so afraid of what might happen to me. Thank you.

  • Hello FrancescaIF

I'm sorry to hear that you're waiting on an appointment with the dermatologist at the moment. I think that most of our members here will understand how difficult this period of waiting can be and it's natural to feel anxious about things.

You might find it useful to have a look at the NHS webpages about managing health anxiety. There's lots of information and tips as well as some links to podcasts which may help you whilst you're waiting for your appointment.

You're also welcome to give our team of nurses a call to chat things through as sometimes this can help as well. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your appointment.

    Best wishes,

  • I went to the chiropodist 30 July for the usual foot care  and he asked if I knew about the lesion under my foot between my toes and the ball of my foot and advised me to se my GP, Which I did and got a appointment to go for photos the 11 Aug at the Hospital. The photographer struggled to take a picture because of where the lesion is  but did take several after help from her manager and now I've been sent a appointment to go to the hospital on the 8 Sept and allow up to 3 hours for the appointment.. I was wondering if anyone else had a lesion there it seems most people have a mole which I haven't. Any advice would be very welcome
