Lower back/ovarian pain

Hi there

At the beginning of August this year I had a nagging pain in my lower right side and some spotting/irregular bleeding which lasted for around two weeks. I'd never had a smear test before and my mum had just been diagnosed with leukemia so I was super paranoid and booked a smear test and GP appointment.

The bleeding stopped but I was still tested for STIs, other infections - all came back clear. My smear came back HPV positive and borderline cell changes, but I've since had a colposcopy appointment and biopsy taken, which came back today as clear and no pre-cancerous cells.

My back pain has still persisted however. Sometimes it's bad and makes me wince, or radiates down my right thigh, and then sometimes, even for a couple of weeks, I don't even feel it. Previously I have had swelling on the back too in the place where it is coming from but this doesn't seem as pronounced at the moment, yet the pressurising/nagging pain is still there. I had blood tests (I'm not sure if CA125 or not but definitely for thyroid, hormones, kidney, liver function) and they all came back normal. The doctor said it's probably just muscle ache.

Thing is, I can FEEL something in my back, like it's pressing on something - it's not muscle ache! My periods have also been a bit abnormal recently (every 40/50 days) but I have been really stressed and this tends to affect my cycle. I have an ultrasound this week to see if I have PCOS but I'm quite worried that it will reveal ovarian cancer. I know it sounds dramatic, but my mum just felt quite tired in August this year, now she's in intenstive care with leukemia and HLH.

Does anyone have any advice or have been in a similar situation?

  • Hello Brainiac098

I'm sorry to hear about your recent health problems and also that your Mum is currently in intensive care. I'm sure that it's a very difficult time for you.

It's good to hear that the GP has continued investigations to try and find out what is causing your symptoms and hopefully the ultrasound will give them some answers.

I'd ceratinly talk to your GP about how stressed you are feeling and discuss what impact that may be having on  your cycle and the symptoms you're experiencing. It may be that they are able to offer some support to help you deal with everything else that is going on at the moment. It might also be helpful to have a look at the NHS webpages on stress and anxiety where you'll find some information, tips and podcasts that may be useful. I've linked it for you here

I do hope that you have some answers soon and that your Mum improves.

    Best wishes,
