Lung cancer at 26?

Hi everyone,

I have been having severe pain in my shoulder blade for 7 weeks now, pain that is travelling down my arm and hand feels like it's burning. The pain also goes to my neck and now I'm starting to feel pain in my rib.

I am extremely worried about this. I had a blood test which came out clear, I started experiencing chest pains so I went to the A&E who said the chest x ray was clear and I could have indigestion, which I have never had before.

As my symptoms have got worse I have asked my GP to refer me for a CT Scan but she refused as she doesn't believe my issues are related and I just have anxiety.

I am really panicking about this, I have a ultrasound coming up but I keep reading online about Pancoast Tumors and i know I shouldn't self diagnose myself but I can't help it.

Has anyone else had similar symptoms?

  • It's really promising that your chest X-ray was clear, but do keep pushing if you don't feel right. I had chest pain in July and chest X-ray was clear. I continued to push and had a CT scan in August that showed a 5cm posterior mediastinal mass next to my aorta and pulmonary artery. I'm 32! I don't think it's taken seriously when we are young but sometimes you just have to persist. Good luck and I hope all is ok with you x

Thank you for your response, I hope you are keeping well!

I feel the doctors are not taking me seriously and keep saying I am too young and I am having anxiety! But I know my pain and it doesn't feel right. I have another doctors appointment soon and I will try to keep pushing for a CT scan as I know x rays are not always clear. My anxiety is through the roof because of this.
Good luck with everything and feel free to message me if you'd like x

I totally understand your frustration. I'd been back and forth to the GP for around a year. I was having really bad night sweats, felt really tired all the time. Bloods all came back ok.
In July I attended A&E, I woke in the morning with really severe chest pain which travelled up my neck and to my left arm and Jaw. Had chest X-ray and nothing showed. Had some bloods and I had an elevated Troponin. They sent me home with naproxen and said I had pericarditis. The next day the pain was bad so I attended again. Had more bloods that showed I had an elevated D-dimer so I was admitted with a suspected Pulmonary embolism. Started blood thinners and was discharged with an outpatient CT scan. This is the point my tumour was found.
I can only say persist. If things don't feel ok for you, press for answers. I felt like a massive hypochondriac- I was doubting myself that my symptoms were real. But here I am with a big tumour nobody expected to find! Now waiting for major surgery.
I work in healthcare so I want to reassure you that the majority of the time these things are nothing to worry about, but if you are experiencing pain and other symptoms with no answer as to why, push push push! Wish I had done sooner x
