Found a lump on my breast

Hi Everyone

I had a mammogram 5 weeks ago which came back clear,  and i breathed a sigh of relief. But only 5  days ago i found a lump on my breast. Ive been referred to the breast clinic and have an appointment in 2 weeks.  Im really worried and go between telling myself its a cyst and all will be ok and then telling myself i need to be realistic and prepare for news i do  not want. I don't know what to expect at the appointment and or how to manage the worry until my appointment   All comments are more than welcome  Lis xxx

  • Hello!

I have just read your post and just wanted to reach out to you. I really do understand how you're feeling. But I must start by saying this. 80% of lumps are nothing to worry about. You've had a clear mammogram so that's positive. Your head will be going crazy right now and that is normal. You have 2 weeks to think so I'd encourage you to stay as positive and as distracted as possible. Stay off Google! You'll only read the bad stuff when there is so much more good stuff to know. Stay with your facts! Worrying yourself stupid now will not change the outcome which let's face it may well be good news!

Try and stay in the here and now. Anticipatory anxiety will harm you and distort your thinking.

You will be examined at the appointment and may have an ultrasound to check what's going on. Often this will be enough for them to tell you what may be going on. If it is a cyst it may get drained. This doesn't hurt. If they're in anyway worried they'll carry out a biopsy. This is painless. I've been where you are and what I'd say is never be afraid to ask any questions you have. You're in charge and it's your body so ask. If they do a biopsy they'll get back to you with the results within about 7-10 days.

If all is well you'll be told as much on the day so you can get back on with life.

I hope this has helped you. Stay positive and optimistic x

  • Hi MrsBoo

Thank you so much for your reply. It is the unknown thats the difficult part, and because of that the  mind just runs away with itself!  Its useful to know what is likely to hapoen at the  appointment  and that has settled me a bit and thanks for the positivity and encouragement.  I like to plan and im finding myself putting off any  plans past 2 weeks..not good for the old mood . So I'll plan for a busy 2 weeks instead.

You're right i need to stay clear of Dr Google he never has the best  news!

    Hope you are ok?
