Smear test and colposcopy results

Hello.

my smear tests have always been clear until October I had hpv positive with adnormal cells.

Low grade.

As first I was constantly crying and was convinced I had cervical cancer (I know that's not the case but it's how I felt).

Anyway my appointment took 2 more weeks to come for a colposcopy.

So 7 weeks in total from my smear.

I attended my colposcopy and they noticed cervical ectropion which didn't help as I bled alot for a clear picture.

I then received my results from my colposcopy was clear and to be next tested in three years.

I'm very happy with the news but not very convinced

How can I go from abnormal cells to clear after 7 weeks?. Nothing mentioned about the hpv either?!.

I really don't like the thought to just go about my life then things start going wrong and maybe they missed something? Or biopsys were wrong?.

I'm very confused as I had no treatment only 3 biopsys taken at colposcopy.

Many thanks in return

  • I'm glad to see the good news you got following your colposcopy although I'm sorry you're feeling confused about what's happened.

It may be best to talk things through with your GP but our very knowledgeable cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to get their thoughts on this as well.

I really hope you're able to get some answers and clarity soon Hello28.

  • Hi there

I also had a smear test recently, around 3 months ago which found borderline abnormal cell changes and also HPV. I had a coloposcopy about 2 months after which highlighted a small area of abnormality but the consultant at the time said it didn't look like anything to worry about but took a biopsy just to make sure. I got the results back yesterday and same as you - no precancerous cells detected so can go back to smears every 3 years.

They told me that some changes are very mild and the body can fight HPV on it's own and the cells can revert back to normal with your natural hormones.

Like the moderator said, discuss with your GP if you're confused but sounds like it was a very positive result!
