Waiting for results

Hi, I am 44 and live in South Wales. I have waited about 7 weeks to be seen at the breast clinic after an urgent referral which was meant to be within 10 days. I had a mammogram on 19th October but only went to the clinic on 4th November. They did an exam and an ultrasound then said they needed to take some biopsies of the lump as it was very suspicious. I was then seen again by the consultant who has squeezed me in to a fully booked clinic on Monday to give me the results and discuss a treatment plan as they are almost certain it is cancer and will need to start treatment as soon as possible. This has frightened the life out of me as I am now worrying about every other little ache and pain I have. I've had a constant headache for a few weeks now as well as pain in my arm and back. Has anyone else experienced this? I guess I am just stressing about the results tomorrow but have to feel lucky that I have less than a week to wait for the results after reading about the waiting times some of you are going through xx

  • Hi Nikki76

I've just seen your post and noticed that you'd been due to go to clinic today. How did you get on? I hope that the team were able to give you some reassurance.
It can sometimes help to talk things through after an appointment so if you've any questions you'd like to chat to one of our nurses about then you're welcome to give them a call on 0808 800 4040 (monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

  • Hi Jenn

It's been a bit of a rubbish afternoon. I was diagnosed with a grade 3 tumour and been recommended to start chemo within the next 2 weeks. So far all I know is that I will have 6 rounds, once every three weeks then hopefully it will have reduced enough for surgery. When he said stage 3 it really frightened me but assured me that it is treatable and that the ultrasound didn't show anything in my lymph nodes. I have to have an MRI to confirm so have to just keep my fingers crossed that that is the case.

  • Hello Nikki76

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I know that this will be a really scary time for you. Try to keep positive that your lymph nodes look clear and that the Consultant is saying that this is treatable.

I'm going to suggest you give our team of nurses a call. I know that you will have been given details for a breast care nurse but have a chat with one of our nurses. I'm sure they will be able to offer you some advice and support ahead of starting treatment. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully your MRI will bring some good news. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you, when I get a minute away from my son I will do. I just don't want to talk about it in front of him. He is 19 and took it really hard when I td him. He has barely left my side since then.

Could I just ask though, it is normal to have headaches and dizzyness after being diagnosed? I do think that it is probably down to stress and anxiety as ithe dizzyness didn't start until after my diagnosis. It's not constant just a few times through the day. I have had a headache since going to the clinic last week which makes me feel like it is all anxiety related. Just worrying that everything I read is that those symptoms are common when it has spread to the brain. Trying to tell myself that they were very certain that my lymph nodes were clear though. Such a scary time right now.

  • Hi Nikki76

Sorry for the delay in replying to you. I hope that you've had a few moments by now to call the nurses for a chat.

I think it's natural to feel the way you've described. The stress of waiting for and then getting a diagnosis of cancer can lead to all sorts of odd reactions in the body. Be kind to yourself and take things easy. If things don't improve by next week give your GP a call to talk things through.
