Anal CIN3 diagnosis

Hi,

I'm a 38 yr old female. I've recently had surgery to remove what I thought was an external hemorrhoid. It turned out to be CIN3 (pre cancer). I had a further procedure and my consultant did 15 more biopsies in the area and the vulva to see if it had spread. I am anxiously waiting on these results. I am also waiting on the results of a smear to see if it is in my cervix. My consultant has explained the link to HPV.

I am wondering if anyone else has been through this diagnosis of pre cancer or similar with anal cancer?

I was in complete shock when my consultant mentioned pre cancer and a lot of what she said went over my head. I remember her saying something like you will be high risk of cancer for the rest of your life and you will have to be monitored closely. But I never asked what exactly this involved.

I will find out more soon, and hopefully it has not spread and it just remains pre cancer. However I am trying to prepare myself (with knowledge) so the next time I speak with her I am asking all the right questions. She is a colorectal & general surgeon, maybe someone could tell me also, if this is the type of doctor that treats anal cancer? She is amazing and I am sure I am in good hands, but for me understanding the process and the type of surgeon makes me feel a bit better.

Also - a question on getting the results. First time round she called me back for an appointment and gave me the bad news. I asked her secretary today how would I be contacted next week with the results? She said probably by letter. How do people normally get their results? Every time my phone rings at the moment my stomach is sick.

Thanks for reading till the end.

  • Hello falloutgirl,

Try not to worry too much. CIN3 and HPV definitely doesn't mean this is cancer and you can read more on the subject of HPV and cancer on this page. Waiting for results is always such an anxious time and it is normal to be worried but it won't be long now before you find out more and get the treatment you need. If you have any questions on this, our nurses will also be happy to guide you - you can get in touch with them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Hopefully you will hear from others here who have also had a similar diagnosis of HPV and CIN3 in the anal area. It's good though that they will monitor you closely and that you are in good medical hands. I am sure they will tell you exactly what this involves at your next appointment and don't hesitate to bring a list of questions you might want to ask them. To answer your question, yes you are absolutely right, the colorectal surgeon will be the specialist that treats anal cancer but also all sorts of other anal conditions. She is definitely the right person for you to talk to and will know more about this subject than any other doctor! Rest assured then that you will be in good hands.

I think if the secretary told you that you would be contacted by letter, then you can safely assume that this will probably be the case but if you haven't heard back after a while or you are worried don't hesitate to give them a call to check with them whether the results have come in and whether they will be sent by letter.

I am keeping everything tightly crossed for you for good results.

    Best wishes,
