Months of waiting for diagnosis

Hi all, sorry this is a lengthy post. I've been suffering with right side lower abdominal pain, pressure in pelvic area, bloating, waking 2-3 times in the night for a wee and a change in bowel habits, since early March. My GP Wasn't much help, using covid as an excuse not to refer me. after my symptoms got worse, I went to A&E in May, they did an ultra sound and bloods, which came back all clear and I was sent away.

Fast forward to early July, still in a lot of pain and by this time I've lost 20kg in weight , so I went back to A&E and this time I felt like the doctor actually listed to me, they did a CT scan, they found a 6.5cm x 4cm mass and I was admitted to hospital for 5 days for further investigation. Whilst in hospital I had an MRI scan which confirmed a mass. The consultant said it was in the area of my right ovary /appendix. I was sent home to wait for the results of their MDT meeting. The consultant called me 3 weeks later and said he thought the Mass was inflammatory in nature around the appendix, and that it should settle down in a few weeks, my bloods were not showing any raised tumor markers. He would arrange follow up scans in 8 weeks.

in September they repeated the CT and MRI scan, a few weeks later a consultant from urology called me and said the mass was stable, but it was causing problems with my kidneys and I would need to have a nephrostomy drain put in my right kidney. I went into hospital the next day for the procudure and spent another couple of days in hospital. Again I was sent home to wait the outcome of the next MDT meeting.

I got a call from the general surgeon a couple of weeks later, he explained there had been no changes to the scan and the mass was stable, he wanted to perform a biopsy, but due to the location of the mass a needle biopsy wasn't possible and I needed to go in for a diagnostic laparotomy and biopsy. Back into hospital on 26th October for the laparoscopy, when I woke from the surgery the doctor said he couldn't find anything and no biopsy was taken.  I would need to have another MRI. I am still waiting for an appointment for my 3rd MRI.

I continue to suffer pain, some days it's so bad I can't even stand up for more than a few minutes, I've been told I will have to have the nephrostomy in untill they find out what the Mass is and the pressure has been relieved from my kidney.

The whole situation is really starting to get me down and after 9 months of pain I still don't know what I'm dealing with, Has anyone else experienced such a lengthy diagnosis and is it possible that bloods tests can give false readings?.

  • Hello Caz980,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. Poor you it certainly has been a lengthy process. I hope you won't have to wait too long for your third MRI.  I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting for these important results.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • His caz, have your periods changed at all? Do you get any back pain with it? Are you up to date with smears? I'm not a doctor just to clarify that I'm currently in a similar right sided pain situation but I have other worrying symptoms with it! I had an ultrasound on Friday and a cyst was found on my ovary and my tumour markers are raised so I'm not optimistic on the outcome of it. All mine is on the right and I don't own an appendix! I do feel like the pain has started to rise up the side and it's all strange. I need to speak to doctor about my results but if you feel something is wrong keep pushing for answers

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm 47 and my periods had been irregular for serval years, just put it down to the menopause, I haven't had a period now for about 11mths. My smear test is overdue, I was always bleeding on my appointment day, sometimes I'd bleed for 6 weeks at a time. I do suffer with a constant dull ache in my lower back as well. I just find it so difficult that no one has been able to explain or give a definate diagnosis. None of the doctors I've seen have actually said the word 'cancer', they just keep saying 'this tumor/mass'. When I was having my nephrostomy drain but in the radiologist was lovely, she explained the mass is preventing my right kidney from working properly and my kidneys need to be strong to cope with all the drugs they are going to pump into me. My interpretation of that was chemo.

It was obvious a relief that they couldn't find anything during the my biopsy, but it doesn't help a diagnosis. Hopefully my scan date comes through soon.

Do you know what the next step is in your investigation? Hoping you get some answers soon.

  • A lot of my pains are a lot more apparent during my time of the month but they last a good 2 weeks of the month, from the spotting to the pains to the period which is not a lot when it finally comes. Well having had the ultrasound on Friday, when they found the cyst,  I'm wondering if I will get a call today from my doctor! He has been so lovely throughout and even said he was sorry when my ca125 came back raised bless him! I personally think it's more probable than not that my cyst is cancerous because of how much blood I have been told is inside me when I'm not on and the fact the tumour markers are up. Mine is currently at 76.  If you click my profile I have a write up on what my journey has been and it started with a bad smear hence asking. I would honestly try and get yours done as it may show something and help somehow. I think its scary how they are leaving you with this pain and uneasiness really! I wouldn't really be wanting a mass inside me with no real answers! How long have you been waiting for your scan? Mine ended up being 2 months from ringing up. I only ended up having an internal by luck really! It was then that everything got pushed through for me! Hopefully you won't be too long.

  • I have read your profile, bless you, you have had a journey. thinking back to when I did have periods, they sound very similar to your experience, waterey blood before a proper period and spots when wiping, like I said I assumed it was the menopause. Snap with the pregnant belly, despite losing weight, I've had to buy maturnity leggings to accommodate my swollen tummy and nephrostomy pouch, cannot tolerant jeans around my tum anymore.I'm sure they took viganal swaps when I was in hospital in July,, its all a bit of a bleer to be honest, when your being prodded and poked at 3 am in the morning. It's been two weeks now since my laparoscopy, when he said he need a follow up scan, gonna chase the hospital up, if I haven't heard anything this week.

  • Yes jeans are a no no for me! Yet I'm barely eating. Well I have had a text appointment already sent to me this morning for a consultation on Friday with my doctor ️ The results were sent this morning to the doctors so I'm guessing this isn't great. I can't really be oblivious to the fact that its obvious I have someone wrong given all my tests so far! Just horrible feeling really! Why leave me till Friday! I'm hoping they are going to offer my a radical hysterectomy! I don't want womenlys anymore we really do have a raw deal in life!!

  • We certainly do get the raw deal, it's must be so frustrating having to wait, when you know the doctor has your results.  I'll be thinking of you on friday, keep me posted.
