I'm 21, have blood in stools and I'm scared

Hi there,

I have severe anxiety which doesn't help me when writing this, but I have had blood in my stool reoccuring since I was about 11 or 12 years old, I was too scared to see a doctor and the blood would go away throughout my teens, before coming back as watery, bloody and mucusy diarrhoea, and I would need to go to the toilet often in the morning 3 or 4 times. I am now 21 and it is still happening, sometimes my poo looks normal and I have no cramps, but it comes back red, watery and mucusy. I have stomach cramps which come along with this and on a couple of occasions being out in public, I haven't been able to make it to a toilet in time. I have a horrible fear of hospitals and doctors which is why I have never got it checked, but I am so worried that the symptoms have been going on for so long that I have something which cannot be treated anymore. I am so worried that it is cancer, and I knkw there are other things it could be but my mind keeps going there considering how long it has been going on. The only person that knows is my partner, and hopefully with their help I will be able to contact my gp, but as I said, I would go as far to say I have a phobia of gps and it's going to be so difficult to do.

I just wanted to know if anyone had any similar experiences and what happened when you went to the gp/hospital?

Thank you

  • Hi, I'm 20 years old and have been experiencing the same symptoms, however these have come on in the past year rather than since I was young . I have known I should have gone to the doctor too early but like you I am so scared for them to actually tell me something is wrong. But today I worked up the courage and realised it is better to do something sooner than later so I called my doctors and I'm waiting on a call back today from the GP. I hope this gives you some reassurance that you are not alone

  • Hi,

    You're not alone.

I recently discovered blood in my stool and will be contacting my gp first thing this morning.

I've had frequent stomach rumbling for the past few months also.

I suffer from anxiety but don't delay in speaking to your local gp.

Sweeping things under the carpet never works out.

I hope you get in touch and make progress

  • Regarding my previous post, I had an appointment for a blood test and stool sample, hoping for good results.

Thanks for both of your posts.
