Lump in early twenties

I recently found a lump ( around the size of a pea). Quickly booked in to see GP. During appointment they kept stating it could be hormones and it could be my ribs(?!?!) and that I was too young for it to be anything serious. After discussing my concerns they agreed to phone me in 2 weeks time to check if I still had the lump. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I felt that there is so much emphasis on checking breast but was then made to feel daft for being checked, especially so soon after finding the lump.

  • Hello

First of all I'm sorry to hear about the lump and your experience. I completely understand as I recently found a small lump on my breast so headed to the doctors.

After describing the lump in detail and also the fact that I had a lump and pain in my armpit previous to the lump, the nurse touched only the surface of my breast and said 'it's just skin' and 'have you used a new soap?'. She didn't fully feel the area or put pressure on and I felt as if the check was rushed.

I feel a bit frustrated and as though I wasn't taken seriously due to my age (22) and the fact she had already said 'it won't be anything serious at your age'. I completely agree that there is such an emphasis on checking and then I almost felt silly when I was at the appointment!

I didn't get asked to call like you did, she just said 'go home and relax' and I just felt a bit confused about it all.

  • Just thought I would give you a quick update. I had the telephone appointment with the nurse and again the response was you're only young ect and then stating that she would contact me again in a month. I stated that I wasn't happy around the length of time it was taking to be properly checked in case there was something wrong. She agreed for me to see the practice doctor who was amazing. She said that although she felt it was just a cyst, it still needed to be checked and documented for when I begin to attend mammograms. She offered me a number of breast clinics including clinics specialing in under 25s. Less than 2 weeks from visiting Doctor at GP I have an appointment at a breast clinic.
